Inspired by an article he read in the Times Union about Empire State Youth Orchestras' City Instruments Training Program, Dan Goldberg decided that supporting this program would be a great service project for his bar mitzvah.

How about - instead of music lessons - we teach these kids how to compete in an increasingly difficult workplace?

For every "needy" kid that we give piano-lessons, there are ten Chinese kids who are learning calculus.

"Needy" has come to mean "lazy and entitled".

I met a girl on a plane who was moving to Florida with her mom from New York because her parents were seperating. She is smart and hardworking, but cannot afford piano lessons, which she would really like to take. Her mom is hardworking also, but she can't afford the lessons.
And me, I work hard, but I don't have extra money either.
So just because someone doesn't have extra money doesn't mean they're lazy, and just because someone wants to take music lessons doesn't mean they're dumb.
