Upstate NY Casino Debate - The Battle of Two Heavyweights: Jim Featherstonhaugh vs. David Flaum?

Apr 16, 2014 Full story: Daily Kos 13

After voters statewide approved Proposition I last November, which authorized the New York State Legislature to grant up to seven full-scale casino licenses in certain selected zones, tension has brewed throughout the Albany-area and the Capital Region, which is one of the areas slated to receive a full-scale, Las Vegas-style casino in the near ... No more casinos. Casino will create business deserts. They build a casino but then a complex of parking lots, restaurants, hotels, entertainment. Sounds good. But these amenities are then offered at hugely reduced rates, 55%-75% off, to attract gamblers. Other entertainment businesses couldn't possible compete with these competitions.

dew, most of the entertainment offered by the casinos won't affect the local venues and bars(clubs). The diners, neighborhood bars and "clubs" in A/C all had a increase business. But once you get pass the 6 block area around the casinos it is a different story. NJ said 90% of the revenue would go to help the education system and the blighted neighborhoods of A/C, it never happened, what a surprise. The old wife's tale that the lower income people will affected by a new place to "play" their money and lose it doesn't wash either because they already play the lottery, back alley dice & card games and Finger Lakes. I don't gamble and I don't care if there is any casinos near me, I lived less than a hour and a half from A/C for over 18 years and only been there maybe 10 times, but I also believe that casinos do provide jobs and do add to the local tax base which helps the property owners

Then explain why Niagara Falls and Buffalo and Iowa, where I have lived, all have plywood city close by. According to a UB Professor: for every three slot machines, the area loses one job a year because what would be discretionary money going to the area is now going out to the casino. Your hunches are just wrong.

dew we have agreed to disagree many times before and it looks like we disagree again. I wouldn't believe anything any college professor says because most, if not all, have an agenda they push. I have not seen any "plywood cities" in or around AC,Reno or Los Vegas, have you? As I said before the neighborhoods around the casinos haven't gotten any benefits from the casinos, but they also hasn't changed from what they were for the last 50 years either. Can you provide any legit stats from said professor to change my mind?

The businesses in Vegas are OTHER CASINOS. Get your own stats. No More Casinos has a web site so that you can hear the town hall meeting. I have also lived in Iowa when casinos came in.

So that's the best you can do is call people nasty names? Trying to get people to think rather than just be opinionated. By the way, sport, "sargent" (sic) is missed spelled. rotfl

Well, I had a sweetheart deal behind closed doors with the Injuns, why do you think they bought the land already! Henrietta supervisor was in my pocket, but he got cold feets. My crime family was ready to move in to facilitate this deal, but now it is going titsup, now I gotta whack some opposition or have them investigated. I was looking forward to the increased crime rate in the area, and some nice kickbacks. Everybody loves late term abortion, gay marriage and gun control. You better agree with me or leave NY.

You got that right Cuomo. Except the Injuns prefer "Native American", it is more politically correct, but since you are a commie liberal, I will give youa free pass. I hope everyone forgot about our friend Leland Yee who is a liberal gun grabber charged with gun trafficking to terrorists in California. We should legalize drugs, polygamy and incest next so we can marry our moms and dads and brothers and sisters and all get high and naked and fck in a big orgy.
