I am a frequent bike rider. Unfortunately, sometimes bike riders cause their own problems, especially by taking undue risks. Auto drivers contribute to the problem, often by not being attentive. In my experience, the vast majority of drivers give reasonable clearance to bike riders. I doubt the few who do not give adequate clearance would be deterred by a new law. Education, of both riders and drivers, and enforcement would go further to improving the safety of bike riding, in my opinion.

I agree. All the Lowenthal gang is doing is giving false sense of security to our many friends who drive bicycles. One can only wonder how many innocent - but unworldly - little children will be accidentally killed as a result of "standing up for their rights" against the mean old heavily taxed, licensed, and, by Law, insured automobile drivers?
Recently, I drove my automobile through the section of 4th Street that traverses the dangerous Second District. I noticed every few feet, someone had painted attention distracting bicyclist stick figures on the roadway. At first, I thought it was just another childish prank of the untaxed, unlicensed, uninsured, and unruly bicycle activist crowd. After giving the matter further thought, though, it struck me that revolutionary Council probably used hard earned taxpayer money to paint that graffiti onto the roadway - probably at the behest of owners of tawdry second-hand stores and politically connected overcharging coffee shops that line the street. How can automobile drivers judge the Lowenthal three foot rule by keeping their eyes on the road when they are constantly being distracted by Lowenthal bicycle stick figures? I don't think I am overstating the case when I say it is impossible.
The handwriting is on the wall. After the first little child is killed by a roadway graffiti distracted automobile driver, the radical activist element among the "anti-automobile shopper" revolutionary Council will call for the banning of automobile drivers from the central city - perhaps from the entire city - only exempting by revolutionary LAW!, themselves "in their official capacity".
This situation is made doubly dangerous because of the taxpayer supported Thug people who have swarmed into the area in the wake of the failure of revolutionary social and economic programs. What if an automobile driver is distracted by bicyclist stick graffiti and strikes and kills a little unsupervised Thug child? It is not uncommon in such cases for the Thug people to pull drivers who stop to render assistance from their cars and then beat them to death in the most horrific manner.
Forewarned is forearmed. The political ruling class was successful in building a voting majority of dangerous tax eaters and violent taxpayer supported Thug people in the city. The cry of the revolutionary ruling class is "Forward!". Once a right "of the people" is eliminated, they never get it back. The few Long Beachers who are still fortunate enough to still be able to pay taxes should get out now, while there is still time.
