Where can I find live wildfire information? I live near Ramona, and I see the fire planes go by, but I can't find out where they are going. Is there a scanner or web site? I hate to call the CDF and bother them.

If I waited for the news to tell me where the fire is, it would be to late. I can't wait for the 11:00 news to tell me a fire is near, because by the time they start talking about it is to late to evacuate. All the news coverage of the Cedar Fire did not help all those people who died in Wildcat Canyon.

Living out in Ramona, your best bet is to go out to the Radio Shack and pick up a VHF scanner for a reasonable price. If you want only to hear the dispatch and fire radio traffic for the Ramona area, you will be fine with a VHF frequency scanner which are priced pretty low. That will let you hear the fire and medical dispatch, and depending what channels you program, allow you to hear the firefighters on scene and aircraft transmissions.

If you buy a more expensive 800 Mhz frequency scanner, you'll be able to hear all the Fire and medical calls, as well as the CHP, Sheriffs, Caltrans, Mercy air, Astria aircraft, Border agencies, ect, ect.

For VHF, in Ramona the Cal Fire Dispatch is Monte Vista Local (MVU) and all units with the designator 78 in front (7810, 7880, 7891) are Ramona Fire Department units.
