The art scene is getting better in San Diego. Whoever says that you need to go to LA isn't down with the times. There is no real central place to go, but some of the best galleries include:
Thumbprint Gallery in La Jolla
Scott White and Quint Gallery - contemporary La Jolla Galleries
RB Stevenson in La Jolla
Joseph Bellows in La Jolla (classic photography)
Subtext Gallery Little Italy (many small galleries here, Noel-Baza is great too)
Many sprinkled throughout North Park and Ray St (hipster friendly)
Distinction Gallery in Escondido
Alexander Salazar in the Gaslamp
Also check out Space 4 Art downtown and The Spot in Barrio Logan, as well as newcomers Sparks Gallery opening in late 2013 in the Gaslamp, and Bread & Salt in Logan Heights. Don't forget Balboa Park for all the old-school museums, free on Tuesdays.
Read up at http://sdcitybeat.com/ for more of the latest art happenings in SD. Best place to get updates on what's happening in the art scene right now.
