For my money, French press coffee tastes the best, and I would urge all my fellow coffee fiends to try it. Best coffee ever.

shift supervisors at the Starbucks I worked at did the same exact job as the baristas, making the coffee and ringing up sales, we were fairly included in receiving tips

IMHO, MMMM French Press! If people want the best cup they ever had do it at home with a French press. Spend a little money up front for the press and it will last you for years.

For all of the uninformed... Starbucks 'Shift-Supervisors' are quasi-management. They may open or close the stores, count the money, perhaps even drop a deposit at the bank, but they work the production line like the 'regular' baristas do. They make slightly more money than the non-shift sups do, but it's not significant like a 'true' manager. The shift sups make more because they've typically been there longer, assume responsibilities for production, cleanliness, and typically prep drinks more than anything other job function.
I find the courts intervention in this disgusting. If an applicant for a job doesn't like the pay plan, they can go find work elsewhere.
This is nothing more than another government mandate that will cost the consumer. If you think Starbucks or any other company is taking the hit, grow up. The costs of litigation are passed on to the consumer and adds 7% to our consumption costs for goods and services. Why do you think the Democrats and Trial Lawyers are such good friends? The Dems write laws that allow for litigious opportunities for the lawyers and the lawyers are MAJOR donors to the Dems, who also appoint 'activist' judges to the bench, exascerbating the loss of personal freedoms to line the coffers of Democratic candidates. It's a slimy relationship that we foster at the polls when we elect the wrong people/Party.

tip at Starbucks? for what, pouring your coffee in a cup and setting it on the counter. I want a tip for dong my job too, or maybe next time i hold the door for someone, or let them merge in front of me on highway. I'm going to paste a large jar to hood of my car, throw it in once you pass me please. Last time i checked supervisors are employees too, not employers.

Where did this whole idea of tips come from? Basically the resturant is saying "Come in and eat our food, but you should pay our the employee's wages because we're too cheep to." When you go to Target do you tip the cashier, no -because they are paid a market wage. Why can't Starbucks just pay the employees a market wage and screw the tipping. I'm sure a paid thousands of $'s in tip over the years and I still don't get it!

What is a barista? It is the person behind the counter? What country is this anyway?

Wow. I cannot tell you how annoying it is to read so much anger directed with complete ignorance. First let me clear something up. Starbucks supports the troops 100%, many of us being wives, siters, brothers and friends of those over there risking their lives while you people whine about coffee and the proper names of sizes. My district alone has sent over 100 pounds of coffee over seas, so make sure you have your facts straight before you go believing and repeating internet hype. That email which began five years ago, was also disproved as a fake and not really from a marine. On the tip note.Tiping is an option, one appreciated but not asked for or expected. As for shifts "illegally" getting them, let me tell you a little bit about what shifts do. We are braista's first and foremost. We make drinks, run registers and drive thru. At least half of our shifts worked we are not even in charge, we are only there as barista's. When we are in charge, we still must do all the other above things as well as insure that the barista's receive timely breaks and lunches and their needs are met as far as supplies, cash and mental stabilty(which is a big on if you have ever been in a starbucks at peak). We do all this for only a slight higher pay than they recieve. We do not have the ability to hire or fire anyone, or even discipline employees. We do not write schedules or do payroll. We simply help out the managers by keeping the floor running smoothly when they are not available. We spend just as much time if not more working for those tips, no one illegally took anything from anyone. One clever FORMER employee successfully twisted a law to punish people who are just trying to make a living. All she has really suceeded in doing is hurting about 10,000 people who will now loose the little bit extra income they work so hard for. If you guys think thats great and that the "evil Empire" (that offers more benefits and perks to ALL of there employees, even part time, than any other major corporation out there) is paying, your wrong. Shift supervisors all over are paying. Whatever you guys believe about starbucks I have never worked for a company that has taken care of or cared more for their employees. I honestly can't imagine any of the people I work with in my entire district begrudging the shifts sharing in tips. It just makes me sad. So there is our side of it. Think what you want, but for those of us who are living it, there is nothing good about it.

Haha you guys are such idiots. I am sick of hearing this "we live in america, speak american" crap. Unless I am mistaken, a lot of the beverage recipes are european. The logic behind the cups goes like this...
Originally the sizes were "short" and "tall" for obvious reasons. Tall is the current smallest size on the menu, short is still available, but has to be specially requested. Later on the needed to add another larger size, they called it "grande" for obvious reasons. Then when they needed to upscale again, they added "venti" which is italian for twenty... since the cups are 20oz. They felt no need to change to "small, medium, large and super." Otherwise they would lose their european cultural influence and thus their niche on the coffee market.
You are an embarrassment to our country. What sort of moron cant remember 3 words... written on 3 cups, right in front of you on the counter where you order? No wonder the world hates america, because of ignorant hicks like you. Just the very idea.... its mindblowing.... that someone would freak out because the cups have different names than McDonalds.
BTW, the story about the "large espresso" (lol) is obviously completely made up. First off its ordered by the number of shots, not the size of the cup. Second, not a barista in the world would care that ordered a drink as "large". Every employee knows exactly what you mean, if you order a small/medium/large they assume its a tall/grande/venti.... period. If they confirm the order in "starbucks speak" its because its written like that on the register in front of them.
Please, hop in your pickup truck and drive into a lake... for the good of the world. If you have children, please tie them to the back... since people like you should be removed from the gene pool!

i think this ruling is totally unfair i work for starbucks and i myself am a supervisor and we work just as hard for those tips as baristas. somtimes there are three shifts on the floor for 2 to three hours at a time and no baristas at all. so should they get the tips for those three hours that they did not work. also is a barista calls out or just does not show up for their shift a shift has to cover that and should that barista share in those tips for negelecting their job. you have to look at this from all angles. the shift supervisors should have been considered in this decision.

If there are 3 shift leads and no baristas on the floor, the manager should be fired.
I think you should get the tips when you lead a shift. Not when you are just doing barista work. Think about it... for the same work why would you deserve tips and an extra 2 dollars an hour?
