Does anybody have information on the 70's case near mt. abernathy when a young mother beheaded her 3 younger children after the father had taken the older kids to the park. I went to elementary school with one of the surviving kids...she was my best friend and i never knew this happened to her until I was older and we had lost contact....

What are you wanting to know about this? I remember this case very well. The house was next door to the pastor of our church.. The pastors wife actually saved a couple of those kids from being killed. She actually cut her 3 month old in half in the front yard in a bassinet, and the others in the back yard. the older kids were actually at school, and the dad at work when this happened.....

It was on Mt. Albertine. The house right next to the school. I grew up a few doors down. My uncle saw her kill the littlest baby. I saw an article in People today about mothers who kill their kids and it made me start looking into Mrs. Maloney. She had like 8 kids and the dad was never around. My grandma was friends with her and she remembers her going up and down the block banging pots and pans. If only someone had gotten her help before she lost it on the kids...

Oh my gosh! I think about this often! I remember it was summer time and it was very hot that day. And me and my friends were listening to the radio and heard the news and said wow that's buy our school! We lived on Broadlawn ST. We road our bikes to the scene and saw the Police cover up the body! I must of been 9 or 10 years old. I am 50 now and live in Seattle! Im thinking June of 1970 1971! I think I remember her sitting in the back of the police car. The house was next to our school! Lindberg Elem. This is so Amazing cause I have tried to find information on this for years! I kept saying to myself did this really happen. I remember walking to school and the entrance to school was next to the house and I would always look at the front lawn where it happened. You never forget things like this. It was horrible for us kids to see something like that. I look at the house on google earth and wonder if the people who live there knew what happen. But as a kid growing up in the Balboa area I also had a lot of fun times!! Someday me and my family will go down there and I will stop and walk around Lindberg elem. And show them the house of Ms. Maloney!!

Okay...so this tragedy happened june 19, 1973. She and kenneth had 7 children ranging in age 3 months to 15 years. There is a divorce recorded the same month and year...seems odd to be able to get a complete divorce in 15 days...especially when they had been married so long. Or were there already divorce preceedings going on....this would explain the breakdown...she was 34, her husband 30 at the time of the murders. Maryanne was 18 when she gave birth to the first of seven children. wow. She served a short stint at Patton State Hospital and ater joined her family.
It's crazy because i was the first horror of Clairemont...I'm sure many remember this event so sad.

It is strange to find people talking about this. I to went to Lindberg, I was 9 when this happened. It was the same day my mother was in a car accident. From what I recall is the older kids were down the street playing ball and the paper boy rode by as she was coming out of the house with one of the kids, knife in hand. They were dismembered on the front lawn, I remember the photo in the newspaper the next day, several "blankets" layed out on the lawn covering the kids. Pastor Dales wife (I believe this was his name) went into the back of the house and rescued 1 or 2 of the youngest.
Things were never the same walking up to the school and passing this house just before turning down the entrance.
I have been living in Colorado for the past 21 years and as morbid as it may sound, whenever we go home to visit I drive by. It has gotten to the point where my kids want me to take them by there.

I lived down the street from them, didn't know the mother personally. She always watched me as I would walk past her house to go to school. If I caught her looking at me she would move away from the window. One day as I walked past her house she was outside with a baby that looked about 18 months old. The baby was touching things in the gutter and the mother started yelling "Don't touch things in the gutter! There are terrible things there, like gonorrhea and syphilis" she was looking at me as she said it. On another day walking home the same baby was was in the street in front of there house and the mother was watching the baby from the window, I think she wanted to watch the baby get hit by a car. I took the baby to the door and the mother disappeared again from the window, I knocked and a young boy about 8 years old grabbed the baby and said Thank you and slammed the door. After the murders I felt so bad that I had taken the baby out of the street that day and put him in the care of the one that would later murder him. All these years have passed but that horror has stayed with me.

I heard that the husband was cheating and when he told her he was leaving her is when she lost it. I also heard that the pastor was trying to get her help because she would sometimes run through the neighborhood at night naked.

Mother Charged In Tot’s Death
San Diego Union, Page B-7 June 22, 1973

The district attorney’s office yesterday issued a murder complaint charging Mrs. Mary Ann Maloney in the slaying of two of her nine children.

Mrs. Maloney, 38. of 4095 Mt. Albertine Ave., is in custody at University Hospital’s psychiatric ward.

An arraignment at the hospital is tentatively scheduled for this morning, officials said.

Mrs. Maloney is charged with murdering a son Russell, 18 months, and a daughter, Lisa, two months old, on the front lawn of the family home. Both children had been decapitated an stabbed.

Arraignment Continued In Slaying Case
San Diego Union, Page B-9 June 23, 1973

The Arraignment of Mrs. Marry Ann Maloney for the decapitation murders of two of her nine children was continued yesterday to Tuesday afternoon.

Municipal Court Judge Earl B. Gilliam granted the postponement at the request of Mrs. Maloneys court appointed attorney James C. Rothwell.

Mrs. Maloney is accused of two counts of murder in the deaths Tuesday of daughter , Lisa, two months, and a son, Russell, 18 months, at their home, 4095 Mt. Albertine Ave.

SEEKS PSYCHIATRIST
Rothwell requested the delay saying he felt he would need a court appointed psychiatrist to assist him in interviewing her.

Mrs. Maloney, dressed in a hospital gown, sat quietly throughout the court proceedings at the Community Mental Health Center.

When Gilliam asked her if she would agree to the delay, Mrs. Maloney replied:

“The attorney suggested it. You (referring to Rothwell) felt it was best. I don’t feel I have a choice. I don’t know what to say. I’ll accept it (the delay).

REQUEST FUNDS
Rothwell told the court he has spoken to the defendant but requested funds to have a psychiatrist appointed to help him.

“Is she able to assist you in preparing your defense?” Gilliam asked.

“I’m not sure,” Rothwell answered.“I really don’t know what type of plea to enter at this time. I feel I need assistance.”

Rothwell requested that Mrs. Maloney be detained in the mental health center pending her arraignment. He said he has been advised that Mrs. Maloney has been receiving treatment and medication at the center since her arrest.

Deputy Dist. Atty. William Gentry asked Gilliam to certify Mrs. Maloney for an examination to determine her present sanity but Rothwell objected.

INSUFFICIENT DATA
“I feel we don’t have sufficient information at this time,” he argued.

Rothwell also lodged a complaint for the alleged delay in his client’s arraignment.

He said Mrs. Maloney had been in custody since Tuesday and was not arraigned within the two-day period required by state law.

San Diego Union, Page B-5 June 27, 1973

“Any time the court has a doubt that the defendant does not have the mental condition to adequately understand the proceedings against her it is obligated to suspend proceedings,” Gilliam said.

Mrs. Maloney, of 4095 Mt. Albertine Ave., is in custody in the center’s psychiatric ward, She is charged with murdering a son, Russell, 18 months, and a daughter, Lisa, 2 months old. Both children were stabbed and decapitated.
