This kid did not even get a jury trial or even a plea bargain instead only a judge decided his fate. This is definitely a problem in the juvinile court system, the kids do not have the same rights as adults have. I am not at all justifing his action, he definitely needs to pay for his actions. Its a lose, lose battle and I am sad for everyone involved.

Why don't you explain it to the parents who lost the son. Frankly He got off easy. He is lucky he didn't have a jury.

i do feel for the parents of the victim and also the ones of the suspect. i don't think that the young man thought that he would kill him. i think that even though it was a violent crime, he shouldn't have to spend 11 years behind bars. but in others eyes he deserves it. he shouldn't have taken out his anger that way and just excepted the loss and moved on. what is that saying about our youth today. instead of talking things out we have to result to violence. parents need to teach their kids better morals.

im one of both kids frinds nd the kid that swung the bat deserves it! it was only a game. they both knew better, but all i know is that the bat-swinger should get life for taking a life.

This youngster took a life, not by accident, on purpose. He must pay his debt although I am certain that 11 years will never satisfy the victim's family nor will it bring the victim back to life.

Some say that the convicted kid is 'just a kid and he did not know that beating someone with a bat would kill them'. Hogwash. The kid was a baseball player, he knew what force a bat has on an object.

He deserves the sentence and more IMHO.

After 11 years he is going to come out of CYA really angry. I will bet money now his future is going to involve being in and out of jail for most, if not all of the rest of his life.

One can argue about how sad it is all day long. It is sad no doubt. Taking a life and getting caught in the act of doing it should result in an instant death penalty carried out a few hours after caught.

Don't twist my words on this as I do not think instant death should be used UNLESS the person was caught in the act with multiple witnesses.

This little boy didnt mean to harm anyone. He didnt know what he was doing. He wa simply tired of being bullied by this kid older and larger than him. Both parents were upset from the outcome.. a baby away for 12 years and a child gone forever. When we think about it, what would we have done? We are all human and we make mistakes. This was one of them. Not one person is perfect. I'm sure this boy looks back at this everyday and had a lot a pain in his heart. He didnt mean to kill the child, but he was just tired... I watched the story on Oprah and the story is just sad.

Sad, but stil 11 years for a brutal beating, definetly not enough time. He wasn't tired of being bullied, he was mad because he got punked in front of his friends. This type of behavior will only get worse in prison. I feel for both families, both will be in pain for a long time. Only one family will be over it in 11 years and the other will never get over it.

i totally agree that any of us would probably have done the same thing as greg. what right did the the rourke child have to be teasing greg? out of all the players that lost that day, was the rourke kid picking on greg because he was smaller? there were even reports that the rourke kid was pushing on greg. in a perfect world yes greg would've told an adult, but who are we to say that we would've handled the situation differently? nothing is funny when you are the one being "teased".

Forget telling an adult, why not just sucker punch the kid, why pick up a bat? It's not like the kid was pushing him or hitting him and he was afraid he might get hurt. He was pissed off, but he was a pissed off coward, that is why he needed the bat.

i don't think that he deserved to be sentenced to 12 yrs at all. had he died this would have been a bullying controversy....It still is regardless of what people say ...I believe he felt threatened. My heart goes out to both familes!! I don't see this as a brutal beating ...I see this as an unfortunate accident!

An accident is throwing the bat in the air and it hitting the kid. Hitting the kid with all your force and aiming for the head is not an accident.

This kid did not go there with the intentions of killing this boy.....My son is the exact same size and i have seen him dread going to school because of his size....that doesn't make him a coward!!!!! had a fight broke out without the bat u know he didn't stand a chance...what would u be saying had that happened and the tables were turned......haven't u ever heard of the phrase "pick on someone ur own size" it was simple self defense ..he just happened to get the short end of the stick....like i said my heart goes out to both of the families!!..I beleive that 100%!!!!

My heart goes out to both familes too. But he should have punched the guy. It's not like the guy was putting hands on him. Heck I have went against people plenty bigger than I have. Some I won some I lost. But I never picked up a bat. Maybe because my dad always taught me to fight fair. A bat was not fair. An arse whooping at that age doesn't kill you, a bat does.

A fair fight isn't someone who is 190 pounds vs someone 87 pounds....Maybe his dad should have told him to fight fair.. and he never would have been picking on someone less than half his body weight....Don't u think????? And fyi he was pushing on him! Don't get me wrong i still think this was an unfortunate accident!!!
