Recently, nearby here, by chance on my way home, I passed by a man's house that was on fire. The police nor fire department had arrived yet. I stopped in front of the house and called 911 and the 911 dispatcher said that they would send the fire department. The man was frantically trying to save as many of his belongings as he could, but the house was fully engulfed.
After 2 aditional conversations with the 911 dispatcher, I was told by he dispatcher that they were NOT sending the police nor fire department. I asked the 911 dispatcher what were they going to do about the fire. He told me that they wold let it burn to the ground. I was shocked ! I never heard of such a thing. and yes, they let it burn to the ground and NOBODY did a thing to help this poor man.
I found this incident to be shocking adn I couldn't understand how the gorvernmental authorites could allow a man's house to burn to the ground and not send anybody at all.
After about a dozen phone calls I discovered that in certain areas of Pinal County, and other areas in Arizona, if you live outside a city (I live in The City Of Coolidge), you must pay a private company called "Rural Metro" in advance for fire protection. If your house catches fire, and you haven't signed up with them, the goverments here just let your house burn down.
I'm from Long Island and nearly ALL 300+ fire departments on Long Island are volunteer departments, and they wold NEVER let this happen. They'll send 2 trucks even for a garbage can fire.
The whole concept of letting somone's house burn to the ground here and nobody lifting a finger to help this poor man is a totally alien concept to me.
ANOTHER story about how horrible Arizona is. God, what a dump that terrible place is. Does ANYTHING nice happen there?

My huge fat brother and his vicious pit bull of a wife live in southern Phoenix, so that is ALL I need to know about that hell hole. I'm glad they are a state away from ME.

That's not why it's closed. It was closed because it was too expensive to operate. And it wasn't even open all that long. It only operated for 29 years, not old by prison standards.

Try to remember that I grew up in California. What that REALLY means is that they never CAUGHT any of the escapees.

I was only in Phoenix once. What struck me most is that all of the houses are painted beige, as if it is some sort of civic regulation. The only place I saw colourful southwestern style houses was the barrio.

Actually, the enforced "atheism" under communism did keep down religious and ethnic warfare. Ask anyone from the former Yugoslavia. The Bosnian, Croats and Serbs all got along under Tito then started slugging it out the minute he croaked. Same is true of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
An iron fisted Dictator will often keep down Ethnic and religious strife, along with crime and many other social problems. Look at Mussolini he all but destroyed the Mafia. But is it worth the cost?

I've heard that Iraq was quite safe and orderly under Saddam. Safe unless you pissed him or his horrible sons off.

I've only been to Phoenix once also. A few weeks back I drove up there and drove thru the airport adn returned home without stopping.

And you are EXACTLY RIGHT about the colors of the houses here. Beige is apparently the only color they have. I'm used to New York, where the houses on the street are painted all differnt colors.(My home in New York, which I which I owned for more than 25 years, an 80 year old Dutch Colonial, was white with dark green trim.)

I was station at Davis Monthan more years ago then I want to talk about.
Reason I was told that a majority of the Houses are white or beige is because of the heat. You want to paint your house so it absorbs as little heat as possible. Beige does not show dirt and also does not absorb heat.

Plus beige is really really boring, which describes the populace of Phoenix pretty well.

Now Russian industry, army, education, social relationships, health ... is completely ruined. In Russia now reigns wild capitalism and democracy, everything is for sale, even the people. And you know why? Because in the world markets is the demand for slaves. Russian economy has ceased to exist. In Russia no longer complied with the laws, since the laws - these are signs of a totalitarian system. In Russia, formed a new generation of stupid beasts, which were not taught anything, they are not eager to learn, louts and nothing in life can not. And serfdom back in Russia . Two schoolboys who were sitting at the same desk even earlier, which had been previously equally rich, now lord and slave, who eats up its leftovers. In Russia begin to form layers of society. Not like before, when everyone was equal,(now called the period of slavery, rather than equal rights) Each standing just above the layer of society can do to a slightly weaker anything. Now in Russia there is no vile protection in USSR, there is no dirty their social rights, there is no vile socialist public meetings where people can at any time to get together and start voting for solving specific problems in the field, there is no society that is itself fished addicts, gangsters resolve all issues collectively. Now we have democracy, freedom of speech, civil society, the good old capitalism and normal human life, not like before the bloody USSR. And you know how it all started? In the Soviet Union before the collapse did amnesty to prisoners who have been political, poetomy were clean as a tear baby. Only, for some reason, these prisoners were all in tattoos. By the way, for those who don't know this. In the 60-80 years people ran of the Soviet Union who had fled to the United States for political reasons. Despite the fact that the Soviet Union has said that they are criminals, after they talked about the bloody crimes of Stalin and the other demons that exist in hell behind the Iron Curtain, their "regret."A few years later the U.S. came Russian mafia, the kindest mafia in the world. The past 20 years in Russia have made an democracy. Now the Russia is Democratic Saudi Arabia - banana republic.

That would be because they would not know if they did not catch the prisoners... and if they did so it was unsuccessful by definition.

The same is true of Qadafi or Assad. Obama undermining their regimes only benefits Islamist radicalism. Either a Taliban type extremism or a Somalia style chaos...

Sure they are Fascist but the alternative is far worse.
