Port of Galveston sets livestock shipment record

The Port of Galveston has set a national record for the most livestock shipped from a U.S. port.

On Sept. 29, the MV Ocean Drover, carrying 5,585 head of cattle, departed the port for the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, Russia. The ship carried mostly Holstein heifers, along with Hereford and Black Angus heifers, many of which are pregnant. The ship is taking an 18-day voyage to Russia to replenish herds that have been declining, the port said in a statement.
