What is "showing off"?

Putin knows where this world is heading. His enemy is not "freelance radicals", it is an economic one.

Economic warfare and it's results were demonstrated in the destruction of the former Yugoslavia. This is just a continuation of what the former USSR state has done since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

They briefly entered the aircraft carrier race in the 90's then abandoned that when it was not cost effective, going to the most devastating antiship weapons tech in the world. Developed very effective anti ballistic/cruise/aircraft weaponry. And this is just a counterpunch to the Americans putting their BMD in POLAND, to counter the "islamic threat" of a missile launch on the US. It has nothing to do with a "launch from Iran", more to do with a subtle or not so subtle message to Moscow that we are now encircling you to contain your only threat to us. Neutering your resistance to us to try to stop the "nasty" direction you are taking with your mineral resources.

Putin is merely saying enough of that, we are not Tajikstan or Kyrgystan. Deal with us on our own merit, accept the fact that Russia will not be owned, and certainly won't be pounded into submission like Iraq.

If you don't believe there is a "sub game" that is continually played out regardless of political change in the United States, then you are blind.

The PNAC agenda is merely a continuum of George Kennan's (1904-2005) policy directive towards the former Soviet satellites, and was directed at Yugoslavia also.

Wolfowitz was merely a plagiarizer.Kennedy, Clinton or the wolf pack that is in power now, the message has been the same, South America, Vietnam, Korea or Yugoslavia, socialism/communism has to be destroyed or it will destroy us, and "our way of life".

Russia has always been targetted, just that it cannot be felled by some small right wing militias like in South America. It's a much larger chess game.

If you want to defeat the mideast, and control China,(which can be controlled via oil in a fast industrializing/transportation market) you have to defeat Russia first.

Soviet Russia or today's Russia, they have always been the counterweight.

George F Kennan's policy directive 1948

"we have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population.... In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity ... To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction.... We should cease to talk about vague and ... unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of the living standards, and democratization. The day is not far off when we are going to have to deal in straight power concepts. The less we are then hampered by idealistic slogans, the better."

Paul Wolfowitz policy directive 2002

"Our first objective is to prevent the re-emergence of a new rival, either on the territory of the former Soviet Union or elsewhere, that poses a threat on the order of that posed formerly by the Soviet Union. This is a dominant consideration underlying the new regional defense strategy and requires that we endeavor to prevent any hostile power from dominating a region whose resources would, under consolidated control, be sufficient to generate global power.... we must account sufficiently for the interests of the advanced industrial nations to discourage them from challenging our leadership or seeking to overturn the established political and economic order.... we must maintain the mechanisms for deterring potential competitors from even aspiring to a larger regional or global role.... Our strategy must now refocus on precluding the emergence of any potential future global competitor.... In the Middle East and Southwest Asia, our overall objective is to remain the predominant outside power in the region and preserve U.S. and Western access to the region's oil."

Key phrase.

"This is a dominant consideration underlying the new regional defense strategy and requires that we endeavor to prevent any hostile power from dominating a region whose resources would,"
