Full story: WUSA Washington, DC

Some of the world's poorest people in Africa and Asia are hardest hit by public corruption -- forced to pay bribes for police protection, education and justice --according to a survey released Thursday.

Probably because the western powers have such an influence in these poor countries, as well as some blame in the self-destruction of these countries!

How can you conclude that corruption in these countries is the result of western influence?

Are western countries at fault for all the wars, incompetence & self-interest of the African leaders?

Are western countries at fault for the corruption in Russia, Ukraine & Moldova?

Think before you open your lefty mouth.

The majority of the African nations are former colonies of western countries. When these countries were "given back" to their people they were usually set up with puppet governments or leaders closely associated with he former colonial state to continue to benefit the former ruling power. These countries, or should I say government leaders, are now benefiting form outsourced manufacturing (mostly textile) deals from western nations.

The same goes for the eastern bloc countries. They were once part of, or lived in the shadow of, the former Soviet regime that was rife with corruption. When the iron curtain fell the same process occurred but with a bit different dynamic.

In either case you are seeing a great divide of economic wealth between those in power and those who make up the general populous. Since western countries are buying goods from these nations regardless of the treatment of the workers or corrupt practices they are basically supporting the practices.

I don't totally agree that western nations are solely at fault but they do make one hell of a contribution. But to say that there is no influence at all is a bit naive.

In my opinion, the greatest influence is cultural and I would suggest that the most corrupt countries are the ones where people are more easily intimidated and have suffered the greatest deal of abuse, war, dictatorship, foreign domination etc.

In Romania we have a proverb: "A bowed head should fear no sword". I'm not sure the translation is 100% accurate, but you get the idea. I would say we are easily intimidated and lack self confidence, others would call this wisdom, others would call it "survival skills" and others would call it "result orientation" :)
