More U.S. troops headed to Afghanistan

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says that the U.S. intends to send many more combat forces to Afghanistan next year, regardless of whether troop levels in Iraq are cut further in the second half of this year.

The number of American troops in Afghanistan is to rise by 3,500 to tackle the expected spring offensive by the Taliban insurgency.

In addition, Condoleeza Rice, the US Secretary of State, announced last night an extra $10.6 billion in aid for Afghanistan this year.

The 3,500-strong 10th Mountain Division, currently deployed along the eastern border with Pakistan, is to have its tour of duty extended by four months.

The unit, on its third tour of the country since 2001, was due to have been replaced next month by men from the 82nd Airborne division, who will still be deployed.

The US military has almost 20,000 troops in Afghanistan accounting for nearly half the total foreign troops. However, with more than 10,000 of those forces limited by their nations' governments to serving in low-risk areas of the country, yesterday's announcement is highly significant.

The Nato commander in Afghanistan, General David Richards, a Briton, described the increase as "a huge increase in combat power".

The Taliban is expected to begin its spring offensive in late March, aiming to capitalise on a surge in violence last year that left 4,000 dead and included almost 140 suicide attacks, up from 27 in 2005.

The Afghan government yesterday rejected a US plan to destroy the opium poppy crop, which helps fund the insurgency, by spraying it with herbicide.

Ministers feared that the chemicals would make the land infertile. Instead, Afghan police will attempt to destroy the crop with farm vehicles.

I was happy 2 days ago to learn that at the recent NATO summit France finally stepped up to the plate. France decided to send 700 more troops to help out.

But then I realized something. France is sending it's troops to eastern Afghanistan not the sounthern violent Kandahar area where Canada is located. Canada has extended it's mission for 2 more years so long as the rest of NATOpitches in more and gives us more support in that violent area.

But no, no, no...France and the rest of the "tough"(ha ha) european NATO allies refuse to help in the more violent areas.

Canada is getting some extra suport from US forces who can re-locate to the Kandahar area since France will replace the US forces in their area.

As since the beginning of the Afghan mission...it is Canada, the US and the UK doing all the "heavy" work.

Europe, our NATO allies, are full of girly men sissies. Or are they afraid of the backlash from all those islamo immigrants? Bunch of wimps!

Afghanisan is not Iraq. Too much to say and explain, but it was your president Bush who made the mistake of Iraq when the terrorists/real cause is in Afghanistan. I'm certainly not slamming US soldiers in Iraq!....they are doing their duty and bravely so!

They are defending your freedom in Afghanistan. No one ever did a damn thing about the taliban, al-qada or Osama in Afghanistan before 9/11 and now things, hard and diffiult at times, are changing for the better there slowly.

I praise the mission in Afghanistan, at least the part of shooting some terrorists/taliban.

God Bless the American soldiers and God Bless Canada's!

Hey, remember how great the Russians did there.
I hope to God there is a good plan put together to get in. Smash the crap out of the bad guys & get the hell out of there. The US is printing so much money to support the war the dollar is becoming worthless.
Get er done, Get em home, lets fix the problems within our own boarders for at least a couple of years.

Huh? For years, we've heard "Iraq is a waste of time, we forgot about Afghanistan; send our troops to Afghanistan, that's who plotted 9/11, not Iraq, etc." Those cries came from across the full political spectrum: from pro-Bush/pro-military all the way to the far Left and liberal.

So why all the long faces on this forum?

July 8, 1947

Many of you will recall that on July 8, 1947, almost exactly 60 years ago, witnesses claim that an unidentified flying object (UFO) with five aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and cattle ranch just outside Roswell,(Area 51) New Mexico . This is a well-known incident that many say has long been covered up by the U.S. Air Force and other federal Agencies and organizations.

However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of March 1948, nine months after that historic day, the following people were born:

Albert A. Gore, Jr.

Hillary Rodham

John F. Kerry

William J. Clinton

Howard Dean

Nancy Pelosi

Dianne Feinstein

Charles E. Schumer

Barbara Boxer

See what happens when aliens breed with sheep?& nbsp;

I certainly hope this bit of information clears up a lot of things for you. It did for me.

The last state that invaded Afghanistan, turned tail and ran ... after practically bankrupting their country and causing the breakup of their union. Yes, the Soviet Union is NO MORE ... it's just Russia now. But that won't happen to the USA, because we've cleared the way for the Afghan pipeline, delayed BEFORE the war, but now going forward thanks to the USA invasion.
