In response to your "Same-sex marriage: Faiths' views are wide-ranging" - Both age 72 later this month, my partner of 53 years) and I will be married in CT (where we lived and were both educators for decades) when we return in June for our college class's 50th reunion. Moreover, I am also a retired Episcopal priest in good standing. We shall be married by a UCC minister in a church setting to be in line with CT diocesan policies. Why marry now? We live in West Palm Beach as registered domestic partners, but our attorney warned us that there is movement afoot by the radical religious right to obliterate the registry, as apparently happened in Michigan. Having been rushed to the hospital by ambulance about 5 times in recent years, I (we) need some sort of persuasive document that makes it clear that we are not strangers to each other. At this time there is a court case in progress in Miami re a lesbian couple kept apart during a hospitalization, and the patient died alone. Although our CT marriage certificate won't be recognized as such in Florida (a developing nation), it just might be persuasive. By the way, the hospital that was so cruel to the victimized couple would not recognize their advance directives as justification for visitations, including their health care surrogacy (because the patient was judged competent most of the time). We basically like living here as retirees, but in most locales the culture is 50 years behind Connecticut. The Governor is prepping for national candidacy, married recently, and is not about to do anything to spoil his carefully crafted, conservative image-in-the-making. We are very much looking forward to our sentimental journey to CT next month!

One of the things that angers me is the attempts by the Catholics and other so-called "Christians" to present their opposition as monolithic within Christianity, when this is certainly not the case. And EACH TIME then Catholic clergy speak out against gay marriage, we NEED MORE clergy to speak out in FAVOR of gay marriage EVEN LOUDER ! PLEASE do so ! PEACE ! :)

Congratulations! I have been honored to perform many Connecticut Civil Unions and Same Sex Marriages over the past five years. These marriages threaten no one and only bring happiness into the lives of these families. Things are changing across the country and I'm happy to be a part of this change. Gay and lesbian couples are simply that, couples. Their love is no different than any other and we should respect their right to be legally wed. I am sure that some day it will be the rule across the land. Meantime, let the religious hold their own beliefs and not try to push them on others.

Why not just make up your own religion? Why twist others to your misconceptions? What that article doesn't tell us is how the memberships in those Churches is going down rapidly because, as with the general public, people don't want to be associated with such an obvious ignorance of the Bible! These aren't cases where the existing congregations decide one day to support this. Liberal ministers get their feet in the door and bring in like minded followers. People defect and they now have the majority! As for Bible quotes.... don't shoot the messenger!
