I've tried for a while now to get a copy of our church's by-laws/constitution to no avail. No one seems to have one, whether they're new members or longtime members. There was one somewhere, but it can't be found now, and I was just told it was voted to be "changed" before we came there, and it was being worked on. First they said it was voted on in 1994, then changed it to 2004. That's an awful long time for it to not be ready. The preacher flat refused to let me or anyone else see a copy of the 'original', because he claimed it might cause a lot of questions, since it was going to be changed.

I have a big problem with this and want to know if there is a way to get our church's original by-laws, but don't know enough about how this works. Do they have to be filed with the state we're in, or is there some place that would have a copy other than our church office?

Am I wrong about this? Shouldn't every church member be able to see their own church's by-laws at any time? Isn't there some type of law about this and it having to be filed somewhere? Or does anyone care anymore?

Thank you for the reply. I am sorry for sounding so frustrated. I really don't want to name the church on a public board, but if you would like, you can email me at petessake55 @ aol.com , without the spaces, of course, and I'll tell you the name of it, and location if needed. It's a Southern Baptist. Thanks.

I too need a copy of the church's by-laws. We have a new Pastor, and he refuse to give a copy to anyone. I can see there are some things illegal being done within the church, and I'm trying to call it to his attention however, he feels as though he is indispensable. He thinks he is God almighty. I need to show him in the by-laws where he is wrong before it is too late.
I'm going to try the Attorney General's Office.

Go to the Chairman of the Deacons or the Treasurer to get these. If they refuse, bring it before the church in conference and make it known to the membership immediately.
I know I did it!
Anyone with questions? email me at questions@ministerexposed.com
and I will try and help.

I have the same problem. How can I get our church's constitution? Are these papers filed publically anywhere?

If you are not a member of the church you probably don't have a right to see the bylaws or the constitution of the church. If you are a member, however, you DO have a right and there should be a copy in the church files. Ask the secretary.

does the Pastor have the right to pick and chose or remove any one from their current position or responsibility from Church?

yeah it doesnt seem right to me, but he said since he is now the pastor, he control everything. If anyone by pass him, they would pay a price or worst getting kick out of the church. i've been Christian all my life and never once did i ever hear such thing coming from pastor, whom salary is being pay by the church members. To have such power over his members and yet doesn't walk the talk according to the bible.

If your pastor or your church, of which you are a member (if you're not a member you are not entitled to Constitution and Bylaws) will not comply with your request for the constitution and bylaws....run! Find another church fast because the one you're in is going to be nothing but trouble and you shouldn't be under the teaching of that kind of pastor.

On a side note: not all Baptist churches have taken the steps to set up a constitution and bylaws.

so far there only few of us, who raise the questions and already they didnt like it. We all working to serve God,not for our own benefit and fame, i think it only right that every church memeber should at less know what is written as a bylaw, if there is one. Instead they are using this to threat the member who didnt know better especially older generation who have no idea how these people run the church inside and out.

It really depends on what the by-laws say which apparently nobody can get a hold of. Some by-laws allow the pastor to appoint and disappoint all officers. Depending on the pastor and the people serving that can be good or bad
