What you are saying is TRUE and 100% right. But Dear If we start making a list of things that prohabited in sikhi then it will be so long even we can't imagin. And do you know what all we(sikhs) are doing. I want to share few things.
1. bowing infront of any thing or person except SGGS (Not allowed)
BUT go to punjab every village has their own places of workship (not gurdwaras) these are called "Shaeedan di jagah" and some times few peer fakeers DARGAHS also, sikhs visit there and Bow as well all the time. Moreover so many so called sants. mahants and other gurus are there people bow in front of them as well
2. We celebrate Holi, Diwali, Raksha Bandan (RAkhi/rakhri) and other Hindu festivals with out any reason.(Just to enjoy the things man)
its strange why Gurbani says "Aunn chhod jo kare PAkhand Na oh suhagan na oh rund"
Why someone use this kind if language? and more over how could you know that its Pakhand??? If doing a particular act is pakhand then any damn act could be a pakhand ... I mean how could you judge other person's feeling.
I am actually appalled that you all have associated Diwali to be a pure hindu festival which sikh's celebrate for the heck of it. It seems that you all don't know that us Sikhs also have a reason to celebrate diwali and that is the release of our sixth guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji who was captured by the mughal emperor Jahangir and it was on the day of diwali that Guru Ji was released and in this joy his mother had distributed sweets and the Golden Temple was illuminated with lights and diva's to celebrate the return of our Guru. In sikhism diwali is called Bandi Chhorh Diwas.

Also, please all muslims-hindus-sikhs need to stop fighting all our religions preach that GOD IS ONE then how can you all fight with eachother based on religion? I ask you all you muslims-hindus-sikhs this that when you die will you be questioned by 20 gods? Do each of us have our own god waiting up in heaven who will question us? NO you idiots we will all be facing ONE GOD when you all die and go to god you will not be a hindu, muslim or sikh you will only be a human and that is why god will question you on is your humanity!!!
Guru Nanak Dev ji said- "there is no hindu no musalman, we are all human and there is only ONE GOD"
please get that through your heads and stop fighting!!

As stated earlier by the other it is a wrong for Sikhs to participate in Karva Chauth and Holi but people do and unfortunately there isn't much that could be done. It's just like New Years Day (Jan 1st) In sikhism-islam-hindusim that is not our New Years but we all celebrate it don't we, fine we might not celebrate but WE all wish someone or the other a Happy News Years During my recent visits to Punjab, India I have discovered less and less people participating in Holi and so many are turning towards the Sikh festival "Holla Mohalla" which comes usually a day after Holi. I saw many sikhs leaving on the day of Holi to Anandpur sahib and other gurduwaras to celebrate our own festival Hola.

Well, Sat shri akaal to evrybody, i read all the cooments or reply's n i found some people used very vulgar language & seemed to keep distance from others and some have may be less knowledge about the relation of sikhism woth the festivals celebrated in india or mainly in punjab.
So here are some of the true n actual theoris related to all.
1.Diwali has been significant in Sikhism since the illumination of the town of Amritsar commemorating the return of Guru Har Gobind Ji (1595-1644), the sixth Guru of Sikhism, who was imprisoned along with 52 other Hindu kings at Fort Gwalior by Emperor Jahangir. After freeing the other prisoners, he went to the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in the holy city of Amritsar, where he was welcomed happily by the people who lit candles and divas to greet the Guru. Because of this, Sikhs often refer to Diwali also as Bandi Chhorh Divas - "the day of release of detainees."
so the people who said that dewali is nt a part of sikhism plss don't keep wrong information with u n try to celebrate by reminding ur gurus.
2.How sikhism views other religion?
sikhism always give respect to all the religion whether its muslim,hindu,budhha or any and according to Guru Nanak Dev ji said:
of all religions, the best religion is
To utter the Holy name with love, and do good deeds
Of all rites the holiest rite is
To purify one’s soul in the company of the holy;
Of all effort, the best effort is
To meditate on the Lord and praise Him ever;
Of all speech, the sweetest is that,
Having heard it,. to speak of God’s glory;
Of all temples, the most sacred is
(says Nanak) The heart in which the Lord dwells.
(Sri SGGS: Sukhmani,Astapadi 3. Pauri 8.)
Nanak taught Hindus to be better Hindus and Muslims to be better Muslims.
To his Muslim followers he said:
Make compassion your mosque,
Faith your prayer mat,
make honest living your Koran,
Let modesty rule your conduct,
let piety be your fasts;
In such way become a Muslim:
Let right conduct be thy Ka’aba,
Truth your prophet,
Make the Lord’s Will your rosary.
Says Nanak: If all this you do,
The Lord will be your protector.
(SGGS: Majh ki Var, page 140.)
Further on Guru Nanak said:
Five prayers, five times a day
Each with a different name
Make the first prayer, truth;
The second: to honestly earn your daily bread;
The third: charity in the name of God;
Fourth: purity of mind;
Fifth: adoration of God.
(SGGS: Majh ki Var, page 141)
To the Hindus who revered and followed him, he gave similar advice but drawn from Hindu mythology and Vedantic teaching. He said:
From the cotton of compassion,
Spin the thread of contentment;
Read More:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php... (How Sikhism Views Other Religions)
Tying the knot of continence,
Give it the twist of virtue.
Such a sacred thread, O Pandit,
Make for your inner self.
(SGGS: Asa di Var, page 471.)
so pls don't fight on the name of religion and try to spread peace.
3.Well, i searched out every where but Karwa chauth is not in sikhism bt still womens go for that.There is no harm for that as well it just a way to celebrate hindus festival n be a part of their community to live a peaceful life.And it doesn't matter if somebody choose that n want to make his husband happy n give longivity.
4.some one stated in here that singh shaheedan de jagah te v lok jande ne well i think we should go n that is in the remmebrence of those eho lost their lives to save sikhism from muslims 1670's to 1800. The warriors such as baba deep singh,Bhai Mani singh,Bhai Gurbhaksh singh and karam singh some of these jina ne khopriyan lohayina .tatiyan taviyan te baithe ,jang ch shaheed hoye ,te uballdeyan deggan ch paye gye. so i believ in shaheedan de jagah n u all shud also give respect.

Friend, I am a sikh who does not follow Hindu traditions and does not celebrate diwali like the hindus. Our diwali consists of lighting divas at our home and going to the gurduwara for gurbani and ardas, after which we wish all our fellow sikhs and together we eat langar.
As I stated in my post earlier that many sikhs do follow hindu customs and traditions, which is wrong but nothing can be done about it. I respect all religions, I have gone to mandir, masjids and even churches, in a mandir I do not bow to the mata's and in a church I don't bow infront of jesus instead I think of god in my mind and pray to him.

@truly sikh- you have written beautifully!! I don't understand why people need to fight over religion when the truth is they are all technically praying to the same god, everyone has their own way of worshipping and we must respect that and move on.

Well Truly Sikh ji I am the person who wrote punab vich log Shaheedan singh di jagah te jande hai... The all purspose was I wanted to say At places like SHaeedan di Jagah there are no S Guru Granth Sahib Ji but there are few Pindis.. a small mandir like structure and People Bow in front of them... There is Well (Khu) and people bow in front of that. Moreover in Punjab Sikh people regular visit at Dargah, Peer Fakir Drgah, and other places where NO SGGGS ji but they still bow in front of them and Treat it like same as Gurdwara.
On Diwali we do vistt Gurdwara sahib (any nearest one)and bring Sweet we us and that sweet will disttribute to sangat, Even in Gurdwara sahib the wish diwali to all the sangat.. and besides that we distribute sweets to frineds and relativs, do fireworks, and wish HAPPY DIWALI.

If diwali is bandi chhod diwas for us then why don't we celbrate it like other Gurpurabs?
