There is no legal, moral or ethical injury resident in same sex marriage that is not equally likely in heterosexual marriage. The state does not and cannot insure the propriety or sanctity of a marriage. Rather it is the state's role to acknowledge the free choices of its citizens to enter into legal contracts and agreements without regard to sexual orientation, gender, race or religious belief. Equality before the law is all that is being asked.
Legal: the injury is that some states approve it and some disapprove it. All states, though, in this country have some sort of marriage laws.

Moral: the injury is that we are condoning something that many people feel is inherently wrong. It's like the debate about legalization of marijuana. You know, you only hurt yourself, that sort of thing.

Ethical: you stand for what you think is good, right, and fair. Others stand for what they think is so. Why would anyone expect it any differently?

Why does the state issue marriage licenses then? Would you prefer that marriages be wholly religious? Would you prefer that the churches ensure the propriety and sanctity of them?

The state, here in California, does not seem to like the free choices of its citizens. That's why so many people are challenging the passage BY A MAJORITY of Prop. 8.

I have a feeling that you are asking more than equality before the law.

Lastly...you've seen through history? Were you there? Or are you relying on history books to tell you what happened? Because if the latter then you're using a double standard by not allowing the Bible to be equally informative.

When did the little old Bennington Banner become a conversation piece for people all over the USA?

Will people from Kentucky and Oregon post on the "Caslin's closes after 52 years" thread?

Yes, it did close. Terry's note on the door blamed the economy.

Regardless of whether in agreement on the issue discussed, I have to say that the third paragraph contains much wisdom, especially "We simply distrust the ability of language to adequately present the perfect, complete or final message of God..." Well said. Language is so fluid, so amorphous, that to insist on its rigidity is to misunderstand its very nature. So many arguments could be avoided if we all just understood what language can and can not do.
