I have no feelings for you one way or the other. I don't know you well enough for that.
As for Christians in general, I have many as friends... and I have met a few that I can't stand to be around. But that is typical of ALL groups of people. It has nothing to do with their spiritual beliefs...usually.
Why would I think that you are "encouraging things like rape etc." I never said anything to that effect.
Since you have no knowledge of my upbringing, why would you say I "herd" it growing up?
Being a decent human being is not based on *opinion.* It is founded on the fact that we are all in this TOGETHER.
If I cause harm to someone else, it hurts me also....BECAUSE WE ARE CONNECTED.
There is a term "empathy."
There is also a concept called "enlightened self interest."
Look them up and learn something.
I dont get you 3rd paragraph. I have studied Budhism for a while a dont lots of meditation so at the age I am it I am very enlightened those far in my life thank you. We will just have to beg to differ, what is a decent human being. That would be an opinion but we could diagree all day on this point so I will leave it at that

So do I and I don't need a government, who lets face it does not particulally care about you to tell me what is right and wrong

Ha ha ha. That's a good one!

So, ah, which commandment are traffic laws based on? Thou shalt not convey thine self at speeds greater then 65 mph.LOL

How about laws governing the use/legality of drugs? Which commandment forbids the use of crack?

That must be why the US has the highest drug usage in the world, God forgot to tell the Christians drug are bad.

Firearm laws? Medical malpractice? Littering?

LOL!

What?

Christians did not invent morality. Nor were things like not randomly murdering each other new concepts found only in the bible.

Is this your history of mankind?-

Everyone ran around raping and murdering and thieving with no social structure, no laws, and no moral code. There were no cities because if that many people ever got together they would just kill each other off.

Then one day the bible showed up and everyone went "wow, we should not just run around killing and raping because this here book says God gets mad if we do. Thus morality and civilization was born.

LOL, I guess someone forgot to tell the Kalahari bushmen that instead of living for hundreds of years in small closely knit family groups they should have been murdering and raping each other as they can't possibly have known any better without the Bible.

Sorry, but that is just a silly thing to say.

What about rape? There is no commandment against rape.

Then call me Shellikins or a feminine pronoun.

Please, do NOT call me sir. It's rude, and if I went around calling men online "ma'am", or she, or her... they'd be pissed. Why shouldn't I have the same respect.

If there was no God and i an right in saying it is an opinion on what is right or wrong, does not mean people will run aroung killing people like you seem to think

Morality is Not religion and no deity is needed for the concept of moral behavior to be discussed.

The nature of these concepts has been debated by great minds for far longer then the Bible has existed.

Should we apply a descriptive definition to the concept of morality or a normative definition?

I'm afraid that is hardly going to be settled on this message board.

Is there such a thing as universal morality? Given specified conditions will all rational persons adopt and exercise the same code of moral conduct? Or is morality something we must be taught? Something that a society developed to help govern the behavior of it's citizens?

I got this question in my head 17 years ago. It seemed really important then to find an answer.

The Answer.

Now, so many years later it just doesn't seem quite as pressing to me. Does it matter Why killing is wrong or perceived to be wrong? If the reason we don't kill each other is because there is a Commandment not to, or because we believe in Karma, or because we strive to harm none? Maybe we just don't kill each other because we would be jailed in most countries. Or maybe it's just rude.

It really makes no difference to our daily lives. Some people Do murder another, no moral code or religious commandment stops them, no fear of Gods or Goddesses, nor does the civil punishment they face. Some people Don't act immorally, even without the restrains of religion.

Sorry, I was going to post more links but I've got kids and animals crawling all over wanting breakfast. Good luck with the philosophical questioning.

Thank you.

"Darling" is like a term of endearment, and can apply to a male of female.

I think we can solve this problem by just not referring to Knit and Pray as a "Fundie" anymore. Right wing whacko zealot is more appropriate. She's right, it's wrong to improperly label someone.
LOL Wouldn't she have been great during the Spanish Inquisition?

My view exactly!!! This is just what I've been asking Catholics for years. I get the same answer, because God Told Them Not To eat the Apple.

Let's look at the apple seriously for a minute. This is what just confounds me... How can ANYONE, even someone living as far back as 3000 BC, believe that a God that created an entire universe, would give a rats ass which fruit tree a guy ate off of? On top of that, because this guy ate one of these special freeking apples, this same evil and vindictive God condemned THE WHOLE REST OF HUMANITY to eternal damnation. AND THEN, he decided that he had to send his only begotten son to die a horrible death to save mankind from Adam's terrible sin.... for what? A FREEKING APPLE!!! Compare Adams sin to that of someone like John Wayne Gacy. Gacy rapes and murders over 30 children... result, Gacy goes to hell. Adam eats a f*ing apple. Result,.. all humanity present and future is damned to hell for eternity... of which this dim witted God then flip flops on the issue by sending his only "son" to die by torture to make everything cool again. Whats' harder to believe, that or Greek mythology?

Disagree! One does NOT have to believe in a GOD in order to be a moral person! I have brought up my daughter to be a moral, polite, intelligent person. She knows right from wrong and we have always gotten much acclaim and compliments from teachers and others. And yet, she grew up NOT believing in God.

Andromedust wrote:

Christians love to pretend that they have a corner on the morals market. When I go into a store, it never even crosses my mind to steal anything. Not because I'm afraid of getting caught, or that I'll anger God, but because it's wrong. The shop owner has paid for the things in his shop and he's trying to make a living. It's inherently wrong to steal. I'm not worried about going to hell, I feel an obligation towards my fellow human beings to treat them fairly. It has nothing to do with God. To say that without God, things like rape and murder are not wrong is ridiculous. If you believe that then I'm glad as hell that you're a Christian.

Quotes from Pope Benedict XVI

"Whatever the less discerning theologians may say, the devil, as far as Christian belief is concerned, is a puzzling but real, personal and not merely symbolical presence.

Notice how we can have somewhat intelligent debate with other Christians? Yet all we can from this one is cut & paste scriptures etc.
