It may look like a place of worship in the summer - droves of Londoners desperate for a patch of grass under the leafy trees or a picnic spot overlooking the city.

I think it was in reality a burial site for the Ancient Britons, who did not like having bodies buried within their towns. But our "Druids" are just fried-brained hippies without any knowledge of real history.

yeah, but the ancient Britons were mostly druids, weren't they?
worship in graveyards - not exactly stonehenge or aylesbury.
kinda makes one not want to go on a picnic to primrose - or any other nice scenic picturesque hill - when one thinks about how peeps of old liked to make them graveyards.

Hampstead Heath was a site for ancient gays, and even today, gays go there for certain "rites" and things, like George Michael. Did druids introduce buggery into ancient Britain?

I'm just an American dude, but you hit the nail on the head Professor.

I've always wonderd if after that little 'misunderstanding' we had a couple hundred years ago,you folks might have sent us a bunch of your gay residents out of revenge.

As I say, this is a local matter for the UK.but with all those powderd wigs and silk stockings and such,it's no wonder the Native Indians attacted you people.

the real DUD FIVERS wrote:
<quoted text>no, the Druids were a caste of priests, and they did NOT worship in graveyards. Druidism also practised human sacrifice, and were quite rightly put down by the Romans. Anyone calling himself a Druid today is a deluded loony old hippie. Stonehenge and AMESbury were NOT built by druids, who came along a very long time after the original builders were forgotten.
While the Druids did practice human sacrifice they only did it as an absolute last resort and the Romans used it as propaganda by spreading false stories. Then they barbarically slaughtered them just for their own sick personal gain.

Probably true.
All we know about the Druids is what the Romans wrote about them, and they had a vested interest in demonising them.
The Druids were seen by the Romans as a potential threat to their rule in Celtic-populated areas; hence there were good reason to eradicate them.
Druids were chieftains in Celtic society, and listened to by the leaders and the population.

AS for then idiot who says that modern day Druids are hippies, he is wrong.
Druidism is about the worship of nature and has much in common with the beliefs of the native Americans or many Polynesians.

Nobody can say that sort of thing for sure. The Druids never wrote any of their beliefs down, so all we've got to go on is written accounts from Romans. The secrets and the rituals of the Druids died on Ynys Mon, along with the people who kept it all in their heads.

It's very sad when you think about it, how beliefs that had been handed down orally for generations, perhaps thousands of years, were just wiped out on that day. Gone forever.

To call yourself a Druid today, with a straight face, is just risible.
