Fellow Appalachian "Pagans"; I'm asking for a little assistance. I am from a very small, closed-minded community in the foothills of Virginia. a recent Topix forum sprouted here and his quickly evovled into the same ol' rhetoric with the believers.
I wanted to alert you to this forum (link below) and ask if you have a chance you may want to contribute some of your favorite arguments (cut/paste or original work)to the mix so that the people hearing them "for the first time" may get a healthy dose of rational knowledge to replace the votimus sputum they are expelling. In short, could ya back a brother up? Thx in advance.

I'm originally from the Tri-Cities area! I've lived in Kingsport, Johnson City and Jonesborough. I also used to have family in Rupert, WV (near Bekley).

I'm over the "damnable tummy bug" and have a minute or two before I have to run off to "deal" with the craziness that is currently my life....so I thought I'd post a few things on my family tradition. Some of you may have seen this on another thread and that is what brought it to mind to post here as well.
On the other thread it was mentioned about covering mirrors when someone dies. This is tradition in my family as it is in many southern and Appalachian families. I have heard many time frames from one day to 3 months to keep them covered. In my family we usually keep them covered for a week. The reason for the covering is "lest the soul become trapped within the mirror and remain". Some families extend this to the television and some go so far as to cover all reflective surfaces in the house
When a beekeeper dies, one should either open the windows, or walk to the hives, and "tell the bees" of the beekeeper's death. My step-grandfather was a beekeeper and I remember walking (as a child) with his widow down to the hives so she could tell the bees of his death. I remeber all the bees leaving after that.
Many people will also open all the doors and windows in the home so the soul may depart the home with ease and not become trapped within the house.

LiLi?

Do you employ any workings with the moon? If so, how so? Does the Mountain ways employ moon cords?
Moon Cords may be called something else, I googled it here is a sight that describes how to make and work with one:

Thank you Natalia...I will check that out when I have a bit more time. In response to your question: Some families do and some don't work with the moon. My family does work with the moon especially in regards to animal husbandry, gardening and healing. I'll try to go into that a bit more for you later when I have the time to really do it justice (at this moment I have 2 little ones to look after and my mom in the hospital to keep check on..so..time is tight...I may have some time this weekend). I suppose I do a bit more "moon work" than others in my family, but that is most likely because of my reading outside the "family ways" and because of my "adoption" into two other families and my learning of my new families' traditions. I'm not familiar with the phrase "moon cords", but it is possible I know that by another name...I'll get back to you on that one.

The reason I ask is that the Kolduny that share the covering of reflective things in the event of a death, as well as openning windows to announce the death, do much with cords, particularly when it comes to the moon. I was just courious to see how close the similarities go?

Dunno, it isn't mine. I slipped and fell the other day and my cat looked at me like she was saying "well, stupid!"..this one looked like it was politely giggling and covering it's mouth so I had to have it for an avatar.

Natalia, this has been a rough weekend so I have not had much time in which to respond to your query.....and I only have a minute or two now....but I wanted to at least give you a quick answer and I promise I will answer with more information when I can.

We do work with cords in a manner similar to what you asked, but not exactly......in my family (and in the area in which I live) that type working is called "string works/workings", "rope works/workings" or "knot works/workings" (or magic(k)). Certain types are directly related to the moon and her phases...other types are not. Several of the types that are not linked to the moon have other times/places/requirements/etc that they are linked to and some types can be worked at most any time because it is the intent and focus of the person that gives them their power. I'm sorry I can't give you more just now...but I will come back to it when I can.

Also, if I may ask a favor....would it be possible for you to consult the tarot regarding my mother and see what you get? Thank you.
Blessings.......

LiLi, do you know your mother's date of Birth, time of Birth, place of Birth? I would also need her first name. To do an effective reading the Tarot Constelation would have to be created first.

I don't know her time of birth, but her date is 12/22/41 and the place was Kingsport, Tennessee...her first name is Rebecca.

1+2+2+2+1+9+4+1=22, 2+2=4. The 4 is the soul of the Emperor. Before I even begin to construct this constellation I know that your Mother is within your family, viewed, as a leader. She is the pioneer, the builder, the doer and the visionary. Her curiosity and initiative is always on the forefront of the experiences of those around her. She has spent her life exercising her ability to make things stable, solid, and secure for those she loves around her.

Yes, I will take some time and build her constellation.

quick share, cross-posted on the "Moon for March" thread:

My step-grandfather always planted "by the signs"...from the farmer's almanac and by other signs that he knew from his father. He always said of planting by the moon: "Always plant when the "horns" are up, the moon is growing fat (waxing moon) and she's in a fertile sign because then the ground stays moist and nourishes your plants, like keeping water in a cup...so always remember 'horns up, water in a cup'. But don't plant nothing when the horns point down because the ground is dry and barren because the water done poured all out of the moon and its dry...so remember 'horns down waters on the ground'(as in poured out of a cup and wasted)." The "horns" he spoke of are when the crescent moon looks like "horns on a cow"...horns up meant the points of the crescent are pointing up like a smile or like when the cow has its head raised. "Horns down" means the points of the crescent moon point down toward the ground like a frown. He always had the most beautiful and bountiful gardens....even if everyone else's were blighted to hell and gone..his garden was beautiful and bountiful because of the way he read "the signs" for planting.

Everyone has dreams that sometimes come true, and everyone get that dťjŗ vu. This is a result of all people being Magickal at some level.
Wiccans have a wide range of beliefs. Some agree on many similar things, while some donít. Some believe Magick is something that people learn, while others believe some are born naturally as a Witch, and then learn more how to use his/her powers. To believe either way is not wrong. What is true to one person might not be for another. That would not make one or the other wrong.
I believe in natural Witch being born genetically that way, and then learning how to use Magick, and I also believe considering all humans are Magickal to a degree, that anyone can learn a certain amount. I donít believe all Witches are equal in power here on the Earth Plane.
For example of above thinking: Take the Hectite Witch for example. There is much disinformation on the Internet about such Witch. In fact, there is not all that much information about Hectite Witches on the Net, and there are even different spellings.
I have notice there is some truth on one website, but they are also taking some guesses that are not all right about Hectite. It is possible there was a Hectite witch that was at one time associated with that tree you mention. Regardless of the false rumors, Hectite is not necessarily a Witch to be feared. There are positive Hectite Witches that can be male or female, but there are only several born on this planet each hundred years.
Sorry for the long post, but I was giving a little thought as well as asking some questions.
Let me just ask again and add so it could help in later posts:
Do you know if anyone in your family or in-laws family associated with Minnesota? Anything at all about Minnesota?
You did mention that you did in fact not recognize yourself or thought you were not real when looking into the mirror that time (looking glass). Has that happen more than that time?
Have you ever thought something to happen and then it did happen soon there after?
What do you know about your grandmother, and her thinking of Religions or Reincarnation etc? Iím thinking more on your fatherís side, but either grandmother if you know anything about that would be helpful.
BTW, I spell magic different ways. For my incantations, I always use a K as in Magick or even magik. Usually it is magick.
My posts are only my opinions of the craft the way that I see it. They are not meant to offend other Witches or to cause disputes about the way things are done in the Wiccan community pertaining to spelling, ideas or anything else. We can all talk about the so-called three fold theory later. That is a widely held idea.
Where did you get your information about the Hectite?
