Ouija boards and other similar methods are mediums- they work like chanelling which means it is the living operator/s who supply the answers, supposedly supplied by the dead they are in contact with. I think it is possible that a few people can do this in a deep trance with practice and maybe a strong emotional link the the beloved dead (and another exetremely few may have natural gift for it). Otherwise, folks in the group are just giving their own subconcious answers. In 99.99% of the cases, it just isn't that easy to contact someone who has passed on.
singularly unamused

Amanda, either your friend or boyfriend was doing the answers themselves. Think about it, someone from Virginia who died in hell because of satan? Ridiculous.
