This discovery should perhaps have been kept un-reported until the site was cleared, measured, photographed , all finds made safe. Every time that the vaguest possibility of such an amazing find is reported, I tremble for the safety of site and archaeologists. Someone, somewhere, unscrupulous and uncaring, will see the word TREASURE before their eyes and not historical importance. Yes,it's an exciting fine, no matter whom the tomb contains, if not robbed in antiquity, but to trumpet it from the battlements before being certain of safety at the site to me seems foolish and frightening.

But isn't this what archaeology's about? Plunder, then buy off the wogs or kill them, trumpet the incredibleness of the find, accrue professional credibility and personal fame and get tenure. Not a bad gig. Just look at the employment numbers -- sky high for archaeologists. There's never a shortage of bright young men and women with ancient lucre on their minds. And with these new huge backhoes, everything is fair game.
