I am a practicing catholic though not part of the nowadays dominant position. I am rather a liberation theology catholic.

I just started reading Yoder's book. I am surprised how similar his ideas are to the ones we have in catholic thought in our preferential option for the poor.

I know very little about mennonite points of view. I wonder if Yoder's are part of the main stream mennonite way of thinking or if he is a marginal thinker.

May anybody out there help me to know better your faith? Thanks.

Bob,

Mennonites are quite diverse and so it is hard to state that Yoder's views are mainstream. Certainly there are many within the Mennonite church for whom Yoder's book would at least be consistent with their thought. Several common beliefs within the various Mennonite groups are the following:(1) a commitment to non-violence and non-participation in war.(2) a greater social consciousness than many American evangelicals. Indeed, for some of us, we would be considered rather liberal to many evangelicals. Just by virtue of the 2 points above, it is clear the Yoders' "The Politics of Jesus" comes out of his Mennonite world view. I was raised Catholic but left when I became an adult. When we look at the history of Christianity, we see the close ties between the Mennonites with the Amish and Anabaptist. The Roman church was its fierce enemy. Although I am a born again Christian, nondenominational, my wife and I are considering joining the Mennonites.
I really don't see very much similarities between the Mennonites and Catholics. The RCC is a very formal, hierarchical organization with a lot of rituals. The Mennonites, on the other hand, similar to the Amish are really hard working people who believe in the simple way of life.
