This is a very sad story. A neighbor of mine knows another family in passing that knew this tragic couple.

I don't understand how Delta could get her to Hungary, but couldn't get her back.

Maybe, the European ground personnel were less experienced in dealing with severely overweight passengers.

This woman was massively obese. She also suffered from diabetes and kidney failure, which contributed to her excess water weight.

This is so sad. She was in urgent need of her dialysis and didn't make it back to the US in time.

She died in Hungray.

Life is unfair. Now, her husband is a widow.

Why couldn't Delta return her to NY, since they got her there.

She paid for her ticket. Two seats, in fact.

I hope the husband sues.

There are a lot of questions about how the airlines had attempted to get this lady onto the planes....but it doesn't matter much now. It is a sad story and all hearts everywhere must be going out to her husband and other loved ones at this time.

They got her to her original destination.
Why couldn't they get her back?....Did she possibly gain that much weight in the interim?. It doesn't seem likely, but we don't know.
My belief (i have have to read more) is that she lucked out going there. The American staff knew what they were doing. But, on the way back she encountered a whole different set of people (Europeans) that were at a loss as to hoe to proceed. American Airline personnel agents are most likely accustomed to dealing with the challenges of handling obese passengers.
Europeans?. Not so much.
There should have been better coordination between the two connecting airlines as to how they were going to handle this delicate procedure.
Sad story.

Okay not to sound heartless, but when you're this ill, at what point do you say we can't go on this vacation this year. It's very very sad that this woman is gone.
She had multiple medical problems kidney disease combined with diabetes add to that she's an amputee. Also with her weight she has so many problems. Who leaves their doctors for several weeks when they're in this situation?
As sad as this is that this woman has lost her life and this poor man is now all alone, it sounds more like people who made bad decisions and now expect others to take responsibility.
I agree that the airlines should be able to accommodate her, however they have to look out for several things, her safety, the safety of other passengers and the safety of the plane in general. If she cannot be safely secured in her seats they cannot be held accountable for what might happen so they're not going to be held accountable. They each, three different airlines made the decision not to permit this woman to fly there is a reason for that, it's not just one airline that wanted to be nasty and had a prejudice against an obese woman.

TPMP is very worried about this. His weight has been fluctuating wildly, and he's concerned that if he flies to PR he might have to take a boat ride back.

He's already made that boat trip once, and is in no way eager to do it again...

How about exercising some good taste and a little better judgement?.

Not a time to make jokes, Acrobat.

A woman is dead.

This thread is not about me. I'm not heavy in the slightest.

I couldn't be able to physically do the work i do if i was.

I personally find obesity to be an "anathema".

However, she was still a human being and this tragedy could have been prevented on so many levels.

I simply found the article to be interesting. I looked it up when someone i personally know told me about this.

I thought i would share. Simple as that. Again, it is an interesting story.

I agree with the air line on this one.If she can afford to eat enough to be 425 pounds she can afford a private jet to haul her lazy ass around. She probably smelled too.

I knew this thread was garbage when I read the three words, "life is unfair".

While this thread may extract some emotions, it does little else.

The fact is, the lady died in Hungary, but I doubt that she often experienced hunger.

Gluttony is a sin. It is a sin to worship a fake and fabricated god called "jehovah" and in both cases, scripture tells us the wages of sin is death.

Only fools whine that "life is unfair".

There could have been better coordination between the European and American branches, to assure that this lady got home safely. After all, she arrived there.

She had to purchase 2 tickets, so the airlines knew what that implied along with their obligations to accommodate her.

A lot was taken for granted by both the couple and the airlines. this was NOT a regular situation by any stretch of the imagination.

More attention should have been given to the logistics of accommodating this individual, since the airlines accept her money.

==========

However, in the end. She took a chance and she lost. It really was gamble on her part.

In the interim, She could have opted for medical care in Hungary. She really had nothing to lose at that point (no pun intended).

It was irresponsible. Period.

Still sad.

==========

Planes do have weight limits and along with that comes other passengers lives to consider.

The airlines will most likely settle with the husband.

They can't have the woman bring the whole plane down. The right thing for the airport to do would be to refer her to a cargo plane or a jumbo jet.

Apparently you do not understand how obesity works. Let's say she weighed 250, that is obese for the average woman. If the average person, not overweight has to eat, say for argument 1800 calories a day to maintain body function, a 250lb person would need nearly double that. Considering that she weighed over 400lbs, she probably had to eat no less than 4000 calories a day just to breath and stay alive. It takes more calories to move more weight. It's a vicious circle. It takes a lot of help and much dedication and time to come down from that weight. If by chance she was trying to lose weight and was restricting her caloric intake, she would most certainly appear 'lazy' as she would have little or no energy.
Also being overweight has absolutely no bearing on body odor. For instance, she could shower regularly and smell peachy keen, and you might not shower often enough and smell like a disgusting pig.
Just an example you see.

I think you are right that the airlines will settle. It's often cheaper than a trial even if they win.

I don't understand how there was no issue getting her there. But, they couldn't her back?.

Something is not adding up.

It must have been a different size plane with much more limited seating capacity, which implies smaller seats and size overall than the planes that that couple took to arrive there.

==========

Again, there was no careful coordination nor oversight to accommodate this lady.
