These two critical junctures of the year's progress figure prominently in the magic and mythologies of many ancient peoples throughout history. Again, in Celtic mythology the two are strongly linked to holly. Sprigs of the plant were worn in the hair during the mistletoe rituals performed by the priests of the Celts, the Druids, at the summer and winter solstice observances. The pointy leaves of holly were thought to afford magical protection against evil spirits. Holly sprigs were also brought into their dwellings during the cold-weather months in the belief that they afforded shelter to the fairies, those tiny spirits of the forest.[Source: Mara Freeman.]

In Celtic mythology the "Oak King" and the "Holly King" were twins, pitted against each other in a never-ending fight for supremacy....

But by the time the winter solstice arrives, the tide has turned: the Oak King's flow in power is the Holly King's ebb....

For the Romans, "Holly was used to honor Saturn, god of agriculture, during their Saturnalia festival held near the time of the winter solstice.

>>> The Romans gave one another holly wreaths, carried it in processions, and decked images of Saturn with it," according to the Kentucky Cooperative Extension (the Saturnalia was the festival upon which the Christmas holiday was directly modeled).

>>> Evergreens such as Christmas holly were adopted by common Christians as a Christmas decoration, in spite of protests from Church Fathers such as Tertullian.

A tiny flicker of this age-old controversy still burns today, as I discuss in my article on the History of Christmas Tree Decorating.

Awe. How sweet.

Here is EE, the supposed JW sharing info on how to be a successful pagan.

Like I said before, EE, you need to go fulfill yourself on the pagan forums. I'm sure they will appreciate all the knowledge you have and help you embrace your true self.

I deck my halls, and my living room and my front porch, most rooms of the house, really. This is my first Christmas with my new cat, I adopted her from a shelter in June. She is having lots of fun, playing with the ribbons and attacking shopping bags. Sadly, we don't have a tree this year, we are going way, and even with a pet sitter, I was pretty sure Lizzie would have demolished it by the time we got back, she can be a bit destructive, she is one year old and still learning. This week she opened a drawer and got to the bag of cat treats, they are history, lol.

These articles about Christmas are very informative. I think people should be aware if the origins of these customs, and I do understand why some feel they cannot be a part of these things, I felt the same for a long time. But I don't feel that way anymore. To me these customs have long since lost their pagan connotation, just like wedding rings, honeymoons, bridesmaids, etc.

So I can in good conscience partake off these things. Many will judge me for that, but they are not my judge, only Jesus Christ. I honor him every day, but especially at Christmas. All the hoopla that proceeds Christmas, is just the prelude, not the real event, which is setting aside time to go to church, or take a long walk, or listen to wonderful music, or just to be still and think about the "reason for the season". If some do it for a materialistic reason, that is not for me to judge, I cannot read hearts, only Jehovah and Christ Jesus. I leave the judging to them.

Why are you encouraging your supposed "sister" in her pagan endeavors?

She has obviously gone completely around the bend and is now drowning herself in pagan beliefs. Are you a pagan as well? That would explain your behavior.

There is no mention of holly in the Bible and no mention of Xmas, even though Jesus was on earth for 33 years after his birth.

Jesus Christ knows the meaning of any Xmas decorations anyone puts up on their house. People who do these things and put Christ's name on it are helping Satan mock Jesus.

Who would ever feel honored to have someone throw a tacky, tasteless party on the birthday of their worst enemy and say it was for them and plaster their name all over it?

Many people would get a lawyer if it happened to them, but they will still do it to Jesus.

Jehovahs Witnesses are just like the Pharasies, being righteous overmuch and looking down their noses at those who dont beleive their way.Paul said all days are the same in Gods eyes and each one should do what their conscienses allow, even calling those who are offended by food and days as having weak consciences. Whats ironic is they rigidly follow mens rules that they claim are from the bible while judging those as wicked that dont-just like the pharasees of Jesus day.

Those were always their big weapons in their supposed superiority over other religions, they really don't have much else. Their predictions have failed, they are getting negative press over child abuse cases, and murders, the Sparlock and masturbation video became an internet joke, what else to they have to brag about?

What message can they be giving this time of year anyway? Interrupting people's Christmas preparations to tell them they are evil for even celebrating Christmas, and will be destroyed by God for it?

There is no mention in the bible of a lot of things that we do today. The bible also tells us to do a lot of things that we don't do today, like stoning adulterers. So any use of the bible to determine what we should or should not has to be considered in the context of the time it was written, and also tempered with the reality of Christ's ransom sacrifice.

The fact that others may have a tacky party, what has that got to do with what I do? I can assure you that I have only tasteful Christmas parties, and anyway, tacky is in the eye of the beholder. If it were me, I would be grateful for any acknowledgement of my Birthday, even if the gift goes direct to the thrift shop. As they say, it's the thought that counts, and how much more true that is for Jesus, who can read hearts.

If the intent is to honor Jesus, how is that mocking him? It is just your interpretation that it is honoring Satan, it is not the intent of the vast majority of people. I happen to think many Christmas decorations are cheap and tacky, I have home decor and antiques business, so I like to think I am a bit more tasteful in my decorating. But for those of limited means, who think those decorations are beautiful, how is that wrong? Jesus can read hearts and know what they were trying to do.

Yes, Jesus can read hearts and knows the meaning of all the decorating and that it is all in honor of a Satanic god in opposition to him. Jesus was looking on when the whole celebration started in honor of these false gods and with Satan's instigation. Jesus would never touch such unclean things.

I think she is the kind of person who would hate Christmas, no matter what. She is a fun sponge, one if those who suck all the fun out of any situation. But I do think she is jealous, anytime I post anything positive about my Christmas experience, just to counter all the negative she puts out, I am accused of bragging. So you could be right, secretly, she wishes she could.

That is your opinion, you do not speak for Jesus.
