See the actual last Will and Testament of C T Russell, founder of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.

Read under what directives he passed control on to his benefactors. Read of his lasting legacy.

The purpose of that will was to prevent the Watch Tower Society from becoming what it has become today. Russell did not advocate any authoritarian relgious organization that exists today that has become attached to the WTS. Russell preached against such authoritarianism, and taught until he died that no such "outward organization" is the true church. Russell also preached against the kind of Armageddon message that the JWs preach. There was no "central authority" associated with the WTS in the days of Russell.

Rutherford, in his desire to create an authoritarian religious organization, actually declared the Russell's will to not legally binding, and thus ignored that will.

Russell did have a temporary agreement with the Board of Directors related to the legal entity itself (not regarding any religious organization). Russell refused to take control over the many congregations that had come be known in some way as "Bible Students".

Upon Russell's death, the agreement that the Board of Directors had with Russell was to no longer be effect, since, of course, Russell was not long alive, and the Board of Directors was to take charge of the WTS -- the legal entity only -- and were supposed to see that his will was carried out. Rutherford thwarted the Board of Directors from taking charge of the legal entity by dismissing the majority of the Board of Directors, and thus began what one sister at the headquarters called the reign of terror, so opposite of Russell's tenure as president of the WTS.

No, there is absolutely nothing at all in the Will wherein Russell passed control to Rutherford the authority that Rutherford actually usurped and misused; indeed, it was only by ignoring that will and changing the by-laws that Rutherford was enabled to usurp the authority that he claimed for himself. Rutherford then used the legal entity as a basis to create a religious organization, the very kind that Russell preached against. By 1928, the vast majority of the Bible Students had rejected Rutherford's "Jehovah's organization" dogma; the Bible Students in general never became members of that authoritarian organization.

From the will:

"If any of the designated ones shall at any time find themselves out of harmony with this provision they will be violating their consciences and hence committing sin if they continue to remain members of this Editorial Committee— knowing that so to do would be contrary to the spirit and intention of this provision."

So he decided that a sin would exist. One of his own design. Amazing. Still reading.

The above skips the provision. What is the provision?
Those named below as members of the Editorial Committee (subject to their acceptance) are supposed by me to be thoroughly loyal to the doctrines of the Scriptures— especially so to the doctrine of the Ransom—that there is no acceptance with God and no salvation to eternal life except through faith in Christ and obedience to His Word and its spirit. If any of the designated ones shall at any time find themselves out of harmony with this provision they will be violating their consciences and hence committing sin if they continue to remain members of this Editorial Committee— knowing that so to do would be contrary to the spirit and intention of this provision.
The provision is basically that one will remain in harmony with the Bible, and especially the ransom sacrifice of Jesus. It is the Bible itself that designates this a sin, that if once one has been sanctified by the blood of Christ and then tramples upon that by which he has been so sancrified, that he has indeed committed a willful sin.-- Hebrews 10:10,26-29.
