Recent atrocities should prompt U.S. to rethink Afghan strategy
-- A series of atrocities committed by U.S. soldiers, including the recent slaughter of 16 Afghan civilians, have drastically strained bilateral ties, and shows that the United States must urgently review its strategy and policies in the volatile Central Asian country.

The world's biggest power has fought an expensive war in Afghanistan for over a decade, which has cost it 500 billion U.S. dollars and 2,000 lives. Many say it is fighting a losing battle due to vehement Taliban resurgence.

To add insult to injury, the U.S. military is increasingly losing whatever moral support it has previously enjoyed among the Afghans, as U.S. soldiers have repeatedly committed severe offenses or violence against the civilians.

In the early hours of Sunday, a U.S. sergeant left a military base in the southern Kandahar province and went on a killing spree in a nearby village. He murdered 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children, in cold blood.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai called it an "unforgivable action" and demanded an "explanation" from Washington, while his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama expressed his "shock and sadness" over the deed and promised to bring the perpetrator to justice.

The incident came at the heels of U.S. soldiers' burning of the Quran at a military base in Afghanistan in February, which sparked violent Afghan protests and the killing of six U.S. soldiers as revenge by Afghans.

In January, a video surfaced showing four U.S. marines urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters. The deed was regarded as blasphemy by Afghans and triggered outrage in the country.

Americans are not just being imperiled from abroad by unconscionable warmongers but they are also being imperiled from within by a small number of domestic hatemongers. These hatemongers are few but are very loud. The loud and hateful speech by a few Americans in the current immigration debate is just one example of how the majority of good Americans are being placed in danger. It is extremely foolish to alienate Mexico and its people especially when a 2,000 mile border is shared between the two countries. Peace activists can hasten an end to the U.S. war in Afghanistan by demanding a timetable for U.S. military withdrawal. A bill in the House introduced by Representatives McGovern and Jones requires such a timetable. In the Senate, a similar bill has been introduced by Senator Feingold. George Bush’s unconstitutional decision to go to war in Afghanistan was one of the most profound and costly blunders ever made by an American president. From the start, the rationale was a non-sequitur: go to war against the Taliban because we have been attacked by al-Qaeda with whom the Taliban are sympathetic and provide a safe haven. Why not just surgically obliterate al-Qaeda? The Bush Administration added to that non-sequitur when, musing, George Bush decided to place an army of occupation in Afghanistan, destroy the Taliban, and remake Afghanistan into a Western-style democracy, propping up a pro-West Hamid Karzai in the process. All of this was accomplished without a formal declaration of war from Congress.

We now have some 90,000 troops in Afghanistan. Events of the last few months have underscored a hatred for America among a significant segment of the Afghan population. An American soldier’s murderous rampage left sixteen Afghan villagers dead. A less than intelligent decision by the military to burn copies of the Quran, including ones with anti-American rhetoric written into them, also damaged an already negative image held by many Afghans for the occupying American military in their midst. Our forces will slowly be withdrawn and, while the slow withdrawal takes place, there will be periodic attacks on them, resulting in the loss of American lives.

The blood-curdling action of a U.S. sergeant who stormed into the homes of Afghan civilians and blew away 16 people, including children, is not an isolated one as the Pentagon war makers are projecting. Even President Barack Obama’s “apology” cannot hide the fact that maintaining U.S. troops in Afghanistan is the broader crime.

This heinous act is the culmination of 10 years of U.S. war atrocities against the Afghan people. It’s not that slaughtering unarmed civilians including children up close is more criminal than bombing them from a helicopter or a drone. On March 1, a U.S./NATO helicopter gunship killed two Afghan brothers, seven and eight years of age, as they tended cattle in Uruzgan province. According to reports from residents, the boys were listening to a radio, which the helicopter crew interpreted as “radio signals” from Afghan resistance fighters.

The latest killing comes amidst a series of atrocities against civilians that has further enflamed opposition to the ongoing occupation.
