"Raising Legal Marriage Age to 21 in Indonesia Will Address Social Woes"

Why the need to raise womens marriage age from 16 to 21?(16 is already pretty old age for marriage in some muslim societies)

Apparently the largest muslim country now is implying that Muhammad's marriage to a child girl was not a thoughtful (if not immoral) thing to do for these reasons:

www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/raising-legal-ma...

Family planning officials want to raise Indonesia’s legal age for marriage from 16 to 21 years, in a bid to curb the country’s high maternal mortality and birth rates.

Hardiyanto, the deputy for advocacy at the National Family Planning Coordinating Board (BKKBN), said on Friday that his office had proposed the raise to the House of Representatives because “16 is still such a tender age” at which to get married and start having a family.

He said the average age at which Indonesians were getting married had increased in the past two years from 18 years to 19.6 years. The board is hoping to see the average marriage age increase to 21 years in two years’ time.

Hardiyanto said that people marrying in their teens were both physically and behaviorally immature, and also lacked sufficient formal education. People married at this age, he said, tended to have higher divorce rates.

He also said girls were put at risk when they married young and got pregnant, because their bodies were often not ready for the rigors of pregnancy and labor.

“Delaying the marriage age would help maintain the health of the reproductive organs, which will help keep the mother healthy and able to give birth to healthy babies,” Hardiyanto said.

He added that the rationale for marrying young was that the couple would have time to produce more children. But this also poses a serious medical risk for the mothers, even leading to death.

“The more often a woman gives birth, the higher the risk she faces of dying during childbirth,” he said.

Indonesia’s maternal mortality rate is 228 per 100,000 live births, the highest level in Southeast Asia.

The BKKBN also hopes that a higher age for marriage will help curb the country’s birth rate. The rate, at 17.4 births per 1,000 population, sees the country’s population increase by four million every year.

The current fertility rate is 2.7 children per woman, which the BKKBN hopes to bring down to 2.1 by 2014.

The BKKBN seeks to prevent women from giving birth at too young an age, above the age of 35, too frequently or too closely because they all carry medical risks.

And yet, despite medical evidence to the contrary, there are Muslims who will still defend child-marriage in deference to their Prophets marriage to his child bride Aisha!

Aisha was a sacrifice to Muhammad who didn't bother to count his days and the days Aisha would out-live him as widow banned from remarry.

You have hit this nail squarely on the head mate. Its all to do with ignorance. Litteraly. I dont deny that there are many highly intelligent people (surgeons, and the like) who happen to be of islamic descent. But there are so many more who sem to have a mental block when it comes to seperating what is morally right from their religious requirements.
Still, if they choose to kill themnselves off, its not a problem. Just as long as they stop blaming everyone else for their mistakes.

This from Malaysia:

Malaysia rejects calls to ban child marriage:

“If the religion allows it, then we can’t legislate against it”

Muhammad, a “beautiful pattern of conduct” for believers according to Qur’an 33:21, married Aisha when she was six, and consummated the marriage when she was nine (Sahih Bukhari 7.62.88). That is what stands in the way of ending the practice of child marriage in Muslim countries. If Muhammad did it, it is not only lawful, but laudable, and to condemn it would be to imply Muhammad did something wrong, or at least that his example is not as relevant for all time.

That sort of thing doesn’t generally go over well.“Calls to end child marriages rejected,” from the Straits Times, December 8 (thanks to JW):

KUALA LUMPUR – MALAYSIA’S law minister on Wednesday shot down calls to ban underage marriage, despite an uproar over the recent wedding of a 14-year-old Muslim school girl.

Siti Maryam Mahmod wed 23-year-old teacher Abdul Manan Othman last weekend in a mass wedding at a major mosque, after being given permission in an Islamic Sharia court.

Malaysian Muslims below the age of 16 are allowed to marry as long as they obtain the permission of the religious courts. Sharia law runs in parallel with civil law in the multi-ethnic country.

Nazri Aziz, a minister in the premier’s department in charge of legal affairs, said the government has no plan to review laws allowing for underage marriages because the practice is permitted under Islam.

‘If the religion allows it, then we can’t legislate against it,’ he told a press conference.

‘Islam allows it as long as the girl is considered to have reached her pubescent stage, once she has her menstruation,’ he added.

There are no distinctions between child marriage and slavery. If anything, child marriage is worse: The child, unlike an adult slave (or a slave with his or her parents around) is entirely at the mercy of her “husband.”

All very selfish of him, really. Only thinking of his own pleasure.

A pervert's pleasure to be exact. An 50+ man who could look at a 9-yr old girl's face and still have sex with her. Sadly that selfish man is the "model" to be followed and not to be questioned (see what was said in Malaysia?).

I do applaud Indonesia to try to do what Malaysia wouldn't - to try to put Muhammad's example where it belongs: the past.

Have you ever heard Gusdur? If you know Ron Paul, i can say Gusdur is Indonesian version of Ron Paul.

He shrink Indonesian government. Cut lot's of department. Gave every citizen right to re challenge law that against constitution. Thanks to him he turn social conservative religious police state into more secular. Because of him, Indonesia solve the crisis.(But Wahabis people hate him).

Looks like many American don't trust the idea of small government works.

The problem of Muslim society, that they want big government that regulate personal habits. I don't mind with Shariah, as long as that shariah government is small and limited.

And whose gonna look after these child-brides when the husband is at work?
A six or nine year old is too young to be at home on their own!
Is Malaya gonna open nurseries for these child-wives or what?
The logistics are quite scary,,,not to mention the medical injuries the hospitals will be treating from premature child-bearing and sexual injuries.
The only way can be down if Malaya allows the adoption of these backward practises.

Shrink the size of government! Don't provide government help for these couple! If they found the selves on economic trouble and no government bail out. Other people who can't afford it, and see that happen ... will think twice to have young wive.

But it's not fair to regulate others, who can afford it.

Backward practices? Actually, polygamy temporary marriage gave opportunity for young African women to go to college. It's free market safety net.

I think it's more advance form of safety net than out dated western socialist safety net.
