Ever since the Renaissance, the followers of Islam have been subjected to persecution, atrocities and difficulties. From the Inquisition in Spain and Andalucia to the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, Gujrat, Kashmir and Chechnya, the Muslim people have endured colonial and imperialistic regimes and economic and military oppression. By the means of media, Islam (Submission) has been given a sinister image in the eye of the public opinion, this notorious image is mainly due to the ignorance and misunderstanding of the media and public.
A word which is often heard and associated with the acts of certain individuals, claiming to act in the name of Islam, is the Arabic word: Jihad. Its significance plays an extremely crucial role in the image of Islam. But what does this so widely known word mean? Jihad has a great significance in the lives of Muslims (Submitters in English). Like any language, Arabic has unique words which have a particular meaning which cannot be translated precisely. The best translation known for such a word is the following: a sincere and noticeable effort (for good); an all true and unselfish striving for spiritual good.

Jihad as presented in the Quran and any of the other scriptures implies the striving of spiritual good. This Jihad particularly involves change in one's self and mentality. It may concern the sacrifice of material property, social class and even emotional comfort solely for the salvation and worship of God ALONE. As a result, one who practices Jihad will gain tremendously in the Hereafter*.

Johad means self-improvement and also fighting to preserve Human dignity and Human rights.

Ever since Muhammad non muslims have been treated as scum. Muhammad called for the slaughter of pagans, 82 million hindus have been slaughtered in India alone and the Pact of Umar made Islam an apartheid state. jews & Christians were forced to wear the yellow badge of shame just like in nazi germany.
It is time Islam apologised to the world and gave compensation for their abuse.

Why do you start with the Renaisance? You skip 1100 years of Islamic horrors. And why start as early as the Renaisance (reconed to have started in 1789), when Islam was not forced to stop their robbing, suppression, slave taking, etc. until in the second half of the 1800s? And they did not stop it because of morality - or Jihad - but because the West finally became powerful enough to force them to stop.

Why do Muhammadans so seldom claim that "Islam is the Religion of Honesty"?

What is the meaning of jihad?
"Jihad" is a term often misunderstood and associated with violent radical militants. This Arabic word is frequently mistranslated as "holy war," although there is no such thing in Islam. Holy war is something undertaken to forcibly subject others to certain religious doctrines. As we have seen, this is expressly forbidden in Islam.
The Arabic word "jihad" actually means a struggle or striving, and applies to any great effort on the personal as well as the social level. It is striving to do good and remove injustice and evil from oneself and from society. This exertion of effort can be spiritual, social, economic or political. For example, one of the highest levels of jihad is to stand before a tyrant and speak a word of truth. Restraining the self from wrongdoing is also a form of jihad. It is a broad Islamic concept that includes opposing evil inclinations within the self, opposing injustice by peaceful means, the exertion of effort to improve the quality of life in society, as well as the striving by military forces on a battlefield in defense of the community or of peoples oppressed. Jihad is not synonymous with war, as that is only one possible aspect of the term, and it certainly does not include terrorism.
Indeed, the concept of jihad is one of life, and it is vast, not limited only to armed conflict. One finds in the Qur’an mention of "jihad by means of the Qur’an," meaning invitation to truth using the best arguments, presentation of evidence and clarification. And there is jihad of the soul, which means striving to purify the soul, to increase its faith, incline it toward good and keep it away from evil. Then there is jihad through wealth, which means spending it in various beneficial ways, including charities and welfare projects. And there is jihad through the self, which comprises all good works done by a believer.
It includes the protection of societies from oppression, foreign domination and dictatorships that usurp rights and freedom, that abolish just and moral rule, that prevent people from hearing the truth or following it, and that practice religious persecution. Jihad endeavors to teach belief in the one supreme God and worship of Him, to spread good values, virtue and morality through wise and proper methods. Jihad means striving for social reform and the elimination of ignorance, superstition, poverty, disease and racial discrimination. Among its main objectives is securing rights for weaker members of society against the impositions of the powerful and influential.
Armed jihad is not an option for Muslim individuals or groups. It can only be declared by the Muslim head of state and religious leadership. Moreover, it must never be fought for worldly gain, conquest or revenge. Muslims may only engage in battle to protect peoples' lives, properties and freedom.

Qur'an:4:95 "Not equal are those believers who sit at home and receive no injurious hurt, and those who strive hard, fighting Jihad in Allah's Cause with their wealth and lives. Allah has granted a rank higher to those who strive hard, fighting Jihad with their wealth and bodies to those who sit (at home). Unto each has Allah promised good, but He prefers Jihadists who strive hard and fight above those who sit home. He has distinguished his fighters with a huge reward."

What does Jihad mean?

The word Jihad represents a concept which is much misunderstood in the West. The concept is explained nicely by the Christian scholar Ira 6. Zepp, Jr. in his book entitled A Muslim Primer on pages 133-135. We adapt from his answer the following:

The essential meaning of Jihad is the spiritual, psychological, and physical effort we exert to be close to God and thus achieve a just and harmonious society. Jihad literally means "striving" or "struggle" and is shorthand for Jihad fi Sabeel Allah (struggle for God's cause). In a sense, every Muslim is a Mujahid, one who strives for God and justice.

Al-Ghazali captured the essence of Jihad when he said: "The real Jihad is the warfare against (one's own) passions. Dr. Ibrahim Abu-Rabi calls Jihad "the execution of effort against evil in the self and every manifestation of evil in society." In a way, Jihad is the Muslim's purest sacrifice: a struggle to live a perfect life and completely submit to God.

Another form of Jihad is the striving to translate the Word of God into action. If one has experienced God and received guidance from the Qur'an, one struggles to apply that guidance in daily life. So the larger, more prevalent meaning of Jihad is the spiritual struggle of the soul. In this case, Jihad is always present for the believer whether there is an external enemy or not. We should never reduce Jihad to violence.

A third level of Jihad is popularly known as "holy war." The classic passage is found in the Qur'an:
Fight in the way of Allah those who fight against you, but transgress not the limits. Truly Allah likes not the transgressors (Qur'an 2:190).

It is crucial to note here that what is condoned is defensive warfare; Islam cannot justify aggressive war. Muhammad and the Tradition are also against killing non-combatants, torturing of prisoners, the destruction of crops, animals and homes. Adapted from Ira 6. Zepp, Jr., A Muslim Primer (1992, Wakefield Editions, US) pp.133-135.

Robert Ellwood of the University of Southern California has the following to say about the Muslim concept of Jihad:
Out of the community ideal of Islam comes the concept of jihad, or holy war, which is designed to defend Islam and allow its social practice, though not to force individual conversions, which is forbidden. Since Islam in principle is a community as well as a religion, presumably only an absolute pacifist would be able to reject the theory of jihad out of hand, since other communities also fight to defend or expand their ways of life.(Many Peoples, Many Faiths by Robert S. Ellwood, 4th edition, Simon & Schuster, US, 1982, p.346).

But the Muslim Jihad is different from the Christian meaning of Jihad.

The Christan meaning of Jihad is on one's own personal self against one's own struggle against the temptations to sin.
There is no personal contact with anyone else accept your own self to be a better person.

You are misguided in understanding on what life is about.
You don't have a life of your own in relation with God.

Muslims live the life of Muhammad, and Muslims struggle in life to preserve the life style and culture of Muhammad.

Muhammad committed sin against God in wanting all other religions to accept Muhammad's religion of Islam.

Children draw conclusions based on previous experience. Small white children often conclude that the dark skinned people are dirty and dangerous. John you have been raised probably under a home environment that says all Muslims are ferocious mutt of the mechanic's shops. It is all because of shrimpness of your mind. Tolerance is way of living with our differences. In any civilized society, not necessarily the Western society, we offer each other attention and respect even if we we cannot agree.
Remember the hatred of Muslims that is being shown by the militant and extremist elements is causing tremendous suffering to none others but your ownselves, which you don't even, know. Have you checked your blood pressure lately?
Please don't be a prisoner of hatred and intolerance if you wish to convince me with any of your arguments

You are being deceptive about Islam.
Islam violates the human rights of non-Muslims.
Islam is a culture of death.
The insanity of Muslims is that they live in a fantasy world believing that they are the perfect human beings on earth.
You don't get it Muslim.
Your mind set is that of your seventh century prophet Muhammad, and this is the 21st century where every thing Muslims do is known all over the world.
Nothing is hidden from the public like it was back in Muhammad's time.
Your rhetoric is stale and old..
People have excess to reading the Quran and Hadiths for them self.
So they know the truth about Islam.
Again I say Muslims don't get!
The religion of Islam has to stand on its own merits, and it fails to stand up to the test of being a peaceful religion.
Muslims say non-Muslims don't understand Muhammad's religion,
But it is the Muslims them self that are an example of their religion that every one can see and judge,

And it is easy to spot a Muslim because all Muslims emulate their prophet Muhammad in words and deeds in the world.

You see Muslim you represent Muhammad here in this present day.
And like Muhammad was rejected by non-Muslims, Non-Muslims are still rejecting Muhammad today.

Just like back in Muhammad's time non-Muslims didn't reject God, they rejected Muhammad, it is still the same way today,
non-Muslims don't reject God they still reject Muhammad.
That's what you don't understand.
Muslims in to days world are still trying to shove Muhammad on to non-Muslims, and non-Muslims are still to day rejecting Muhammad.

Non-Muslims have the intelligence to reject Muhammad.
