America Submits to 'Istanbul Process'

Dec 6, 2012 | Posted by: Joe DeCaro | Full story: www.nationalreview.com

Round three of the “Istanbul Process” opens today ... The Istanbul Process is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s major transnational law initiative, undertaken in partnership with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It was established last year to “implement” measures against speech and expression that negatively “stereotype[s]” Islam and Muslims, with a particular emphasis on enacting them in the West.

This initiative was started as an inexplicable, gratuitous gift to the Muslim world following the March 2011 adoption of a non-binding U.N. Human Rights Council resolution (16/18) on the same theme. While the Obama administration claims that it doesn’t intend for the process to adopt regulations beyond the American free-speech standard, our partner, the OIC, is only too eager to do just that ...

from nationalreview:

"For over a decade within the U.N., the OIC has relentlessly pushed for a universal law to punish blasphemy, or 'defamation,' of Islam. This 56-member-state organization, an essentially religious body, is in fact chartered to 'combat defamation of Islam.' It issues fatwas and other directives to punish public expression of apostasy from Islam. Its current action plan calls for 'deterrent punishments' in all states for 'Islamophobia,' a term that encompasses a broad range of constitutionally protected speech, judging from the OIC website’s black list of Americans and other perpetrators ...'"

The only reason people are defacing Korans and insulting islam is that the muslims are out burning churches with the christians still in them and screaming for the death of the Jews and anyone else who isn't their brand of muslim.

This is a lie, there is no such law in the USA....our very constitution does not allow our goverment to favor or make any law regarding religion.

This comes from the UN, the same international body that our president told that there was no future for anyone who offends the Prophet Mohammed in spite of the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

The US has already signed on to a watered-down, anti-blasphemy proposal by the OIC thanks to Hillary's work with the UN.

This is from a Nov 2012 News story...

"Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and Open Doors are just some of the people and groups that have publicly denounced the proposed U.N. anti-blasphemy resolution that is expected to be voted on next week.

The Organization of the Islamic Conference, which sponsored the draft resolution, recently changed the term from “defamation of religions” to “vilification of religions.” But USCIRF chair Leonard Leo said the change is minor and “a distinction without a difference.”

“Having lost support on this issue over the past few years, the OIC is now trying to fool delegations into believing that the resolution has improved when it has not,” said Leo in a statement Thursday.“It … still erroneously conflates blasphemy or criticism of religious ideas with incitement to acts of discrimination or violence against individuals.”

Critics of the resolution compare it to a global anti-blasphemy law. They point to countries like Pakistan, where a Christian woman was recently given the death sentence for alleged blasphemy against the Muslim Prophet Muhammad, as example of how such laws are regularly grossly abused to target religious minorities.

Since 1999, the Organization of the Islamic Conference has annually sponsored the resolution and the U.N. has adopted a non-binding anti-defamation of religion resolution every year since 2005.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton publicly opposed the resolution during a press conference to announce the release of the annual State Department report on religious freedom around the world. She said the United States does not agree that protecting religious freedom means banning speech critical or offensive about religion. "

Then how do you explain this?

"But perhaps, the best evidence of America’s 'implementation' in response to the Istanbul Process is the Justice Department’s dispatching the FBI a couple months ago to investigate Mark Basseley Youssef (a.k.a. Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, or Sam Bacile), the California Coptic filmmaker of 'Innocence of Muslims,' the YouTube trailer that blasphemed the Muslim prophet. As Ambassador Cook can point out, this investigation has resulted in a creative criminal conviction of Youssef, and his being sentenced by a federal court to a year in prison. All the better for the U.S.’s reputation as implementers is that it will be lost on the conferees that Youssef has been imprisoned on a probation offense,à la Al Capone — though, unlike Capone, his underlying offense, without which he would not have been investigated, was making a crude, insulting video, which is hardly equivalent in American law to gangland massacres or racketeering. It, in fact, is not a crime at all. Thus, most important, the OIC’s take-away will be that in defense of Islam the U.S. government can and will regulate speech."

Does this mean the South Park play mocking the Mormons will be forced to shut down? How about the constant lefty screaming against Catholics?

Does this mean muslims are going to quit howling for the deaths of everyone else?

Nah.

From your link above "While the Obama administration claims that it doesn’t intend for the process to adopt regulations beyond the American free-speech standard,"

The way our laws are set up, they are protected from external influence by other ( non USA) authorities ( Like OIC, UN, EU, etc)....
We do not need the Istanbul Process because we have laws that give Americans free speech. AND our constitution that says our goverment cannot choose one religion over another nor can it represent a religion.

With that said...common sense should, and often does prevail. Just because you have the legal right to say what you think is right....it does not give you license to instigate riots. That would be irresponsible and does open you up for charges of libel, defamation,...etc...
While extreme right wingers and Christain fundamentalists love to paint this picture as something that is being pushed onto America...it simply is not.
It is illegal, under our current laws, to defame someone, to instigate violence or riots, to libel a person or a group. always has been.
It is for the protection of Americans here and abroad to enforce our laws...and punnish those that hide behind the 2nd ammendment to only cause riots and terror.
Thge man in question, had been on probation for doing things like this before...he violated the terms of his probation...THAT is why he was jailed...
The truth is bad enough these days,....do not add to it with misleading stories.

He was a petty criminal who just happened to get arrested right after his "Innocense of Muslims" went viral.

All just a coincidence?

Under our current laws, you can't libel a dead prophet, but recently Obama told the UN that there "was no future for anyone who slandered the prophet Muhammad".

Hmmm ...
