On 17 August, she told her mother she was off to college to get her A-level results, shut the front door of the family home in Plaistow and never came back. She still doesn't know her results.
Instead of taking a bus and Tube to Wanstead High School in Redbridge, she travelled across the city to Heathrow airport to catch a flight to Delhi to be with her lover, whom she met two years earlier over the internet.

Last Monday, Subhiya and Ashwani married. For two weeks before the wedding, the couple had been on the run across India, fearful of death threats and of being arrested. The Gupta family house is extremely basic, a brick and concrete structure with two rooms downstairs, and a flight of concrete steps leading to a single bedroom above.
