Come Navratri and thousands of young girls and boys flock together on a singing and dancing spree late into the night. However, the nine days of the festive fervour also brings along the fear of unwanted pregnancies and spread of diseases like HIV and others Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

“Since the last couple of years, there has been an increase in number of girls coming to clinics for abortion post Navratri. It has become a trend that during Navratri there is a slight increase in number of abortion cases,” said Dr Reshma Pai, consulting gynaecologist, Jaslok and Lilavati hospitals, adding,“Most of the cases of unwanted pregnancies come from middle and lower middle class households. Usually these groups are more conservative. During Navratri youngsters belonging to these groups tend to get adventurous because of the freedom that they get.”

However, according to Gynaecologist Dr Jaidep Tank — managing committee member of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Society and also a member of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) committee—- an increase in number of unwanted pregnancies or abortions during Navratri is an ‘anecdotal saying’ of gynaecologists.“There are no statistics or figures to prove this. This may be the opinion of a few doctors. I have never experienced any rise in my clinic. Nowadays, emergency contraceptives are easily available at all chemist shops. In case of unwanted pregnancies, it is important that women approach only legal abortion centres,” he said. Also, a number of NGOs set up stalls at some navratri mandals to spread awareness about HIV-AIDS prevention and the risks of abortion. Some of them even distribute condoms at the mandal. As Sheetal Mhatre of the Mumbai District AIDS Control Society said,“We try to spread awareness and convey information about HIV-AIDS by organising exhibitions, street plays and skits based on theme of HIV-AIDS. We have two stalls one at Aadesh Bandekar’s (popular Marathi actor) Navratri mandal and at Naidu’s navratri mandal at Borivali. We also provide pamphlets having information on helplines etc.” Sometimes, celebrities are also roped in at these mandals to talk about HIV-AIDS.

Avert Society that has been working with Navratri and Ganesh mandals since the past 4-5 years, set up their stalls in Tembipada, Thurseth and Khindepada navratri mandals every year. Mangala More, project coordinator, Avert society said,“We have male and female outreach workers at the stalls who provide condoms free of cost. The response has been good. The awareness has increased considerably and people no longer have inhibitions about asking for condoms.”

There are some NGOs who provide contraceptives at the mandals to avoid unwanted pregnancies. However, Dr Pai is not in favour of this idea. She said,“By providing contraceptives, they are giving out a wrong message to the youth. Besides the failure rate is also high.”
