This post is for constructive purpose only so please don't post any racist comment. I want to start a dialogue between diffent sub-nationalites of India. It looks like this forum is full of people who thrive on our differences and take advantage of it.

Sikh Soldier,
I don't think we can call any language best but in case of India, we need a unifying language. The people who think English can unify India forget that 90% of India does not know English.

Brother .

I call it the best language from an indians perspective, and not because it is my mother tongue ( it is not even my mother tongue though , am a punjabi)

but i respect Hindi because it is our national language , a common medium of communication .

Overdose of English is slavery and nothing else .

When Hindi exists . Then , why the language of our ex masters is necessary to be our common mode of communication ?

Pure slavery .

Sikh Soldier,
Please see ISCII standard and phonetic keyboard developed by C-DAC, pune. You will be surprised to see how similar all Indian languages are. We have 1 keyboard (phonetic) for all Indian languages including all south Indian languages, Tibetan, Sinhalese, Bhutanes and Thai (I am not sure about Thai).
The ISCII standard places all letters of Indian languages in same 128-255 ASCII set. This is the reason we can provide transliteration among Indian languages i.e. a tamilian can read hindi without knowing hindi and hindi speaker can read tamil.

I suggest you read little bit on GIST technology from C-DAC website. You will start admiring beauty of Indian languages once you know how all are inter-connected thru Brahmi character set.

I consider English as tool to my livelihood but my mother tongue is part of my soul so I can never say my mother tongue is better than yours.

I feel it is too late to wipe out English. We need it for professional reason. I get pissed off when I see Indians talking to their kids (in India) in English. What are they trying to prove? This especially true among Mona punjabis.

Why communicate in Hindi when the British gave us Indians a common language? You dont expect a Tamil auto driver to speak Hindi now do u? The Bengalis and the Gujratis dont speak Hindi either.

No, people in Maharashtra, Gujurat and Madhya Pradesh overwhelmingly speak Hindi.

It sounds a bit different than pakka Hindi but it is Hindi nonetheless.

It is easier for these groups to learn Hindi though, since Hindi has many similarities with Guju and Marathi.

Thats true but i feel that its pretty unfair that people expect Tamilians to speak Hindi. Tamilnadu had been a seperate state before the British came and united it with the rest of India. The Tamils were educated in English and in Tamil and when Nehru's policy led to the domination of the Hindi language the Tamils were outraged and they saw it as an attack on their culture and language.

Peasent,
I understand where you are coming from but your assertion that English can be common language of India? Do you know 90% of Indians don't know English whereas there are 35% Indians who have hindi as first language and another 15-20% speak hindi as second or third language.

It is only tamil nadu that has problems with Hindi. It is actually more to do with tamil nadu's domestic politics than culture and language.

I totally agree with you when you say why hindi should be imposed on Tamils but learning hindi can open up lot of opportunities for you elsewhere in India. I have lot of tamil friends who speak hindi fluently (most of them never resided in tamil nadu) and then there are some friends who share your view about Hindi.

At the same time, I must admit that we north Indians a bit cocky when it comes to language. We expect everyone to know our language and do show crude arrogance. I personally think that north Indian educational instituition should introduce south Indian language as third language (just for learning) in schools. Same way tamils should make an effort to pick up any north Indian language (not necessarily hindi). It will open up your minds..and I guess learning new thing don't hurt.

I request all you to look at C-DAC web-site and read the paper on ISCII standard. You will be amazed to see how similar Hindi and Tamil are when it comes to their use in computer application.

India does NOT have any "national language". Read the constitution of India - Chapter XII, Article 343.

India as a political entity never existed before the British came. "English" happens to be the common requirement to pursue higher education in India irrespective of one's caste, religion, sex, language. Hence, it makes perfect sense to make it the "common language".

I don't see any north indians bending over backwards to learn Tamil in the north ....:O

Most south indians would be very happy accepting hindi. It is just that some racists try to show southindia is merged into india as it had a different culture before.Such people are not tamil hindus and most of them are jaffna tamils.

.South india is culturally bound to india from millenia.

It is okay to accept hindi as a national language.. But its the duty of the people to cherish their own language like marathi, gujrati, bengali, punjabi, kannada, telugu , tamil , malyalam..
I am proud to see my mother tongue is standing tall with its head high in my home state.. It was once a style statement to speak in english/hindi in social circles, but now people feel it good to converse in their mother language.. My home state has become multi lingual with all the languages like marathi, hindi, gujju, bengali coexisting peacefully..
