Before you buy tickets, make sure you know you are entering a Falun-Gong promotional event.

There is nothing in this performance that is about traditional Chinese culture. It is all made up by Falun-Gong. Not that there is anything wrong with that per se, but the promoters do not mention the fact anywhere. If you think you are seeing some legitimate traveling dance/acrobat group from Bejing or Shanghai, think again.

Most the dancers were trained by Falun-Gong artists. They do the same dance moves in every dance. They mostly look just like demi-point dance/gymnist moves from the west. I am not a dance expert but it looked like French or Russian influenced ballet.

If you saw one female and one male dance segment, that would have been enough. But there were an endless number of short dance pieces separated by curtain falls and annoying introductions by a childish bi-lingual, male-female MC duo. Very repeetitive to the point of tears.

The show claims to be "Traditional Chinese". However the music and dance are western with Chinese elements mixed in. There was a drum dance and a clicking box dance that seemed to be somewhat traditional in origin. The three vocal solos are cheesey religious songs about Falun-Gong philosophy accompanied by piano. They are operetic. Opera was an invention of the west. We are not talking Peking Opera here. The performances, dance or vocal are fine, mediocre. My S.F. Opera/Ballet tickets cost the same. But there I paid to see real opera/ballet, not religous evangelism and political propaganda.

As I understand this Falun-Gong thing, it is an upstart modern philosophy with Buddists/Hindu polytheism as its core. The adherents practice freedom of speech and private property. Basically, it is not in line with Chinese Communist totalitarianism. I'm all for it. But the practitioners are not towing the Commie line and are sudued, just like Christians and other relgious groups. So, they are persecuted and abused in China.

Well, the adherents here in the States are freedom fighters and evangelists just like Christians have always been, with the same zeal. The trouble is, this kind of advocasy is not new to Westerners. It is new to post Culrural Revolution Moaists. I think they think they're being clever disguising their show as a forum for evangelism. You are likely to feel taken advantage of if you see this show and you are not a Falun-Gong adherent.

On a positive note, the costumes are beautiful and colorful, the girls are pretty, the boys are handsome and the female MC has nice sounding Mandarin.

That's about it.
