The mayan acopralypse is in fact a very recent myth (about 50 years or so max).

The interesting thing is the fact that the mayan calendar was not actually mayan. It was in fact Olmec in origin.
For the record the olmec originated in Guerrero Mexic in the hills and valleys and had developed their calendar in the years when they were still small farming villages. By the time that they grew to be a civilisation their calendar worked so well that it was dispersed by settlers from the Olmec civilisation into the jungles & plauns of Chiapas during the Mayan beginnings and particularly during the fall of the Olmec civilisation caused by a population explosion driven lack of resources.

The Olmec have left relics of their civilisation, such as the statues of the "stone age motorbikers of despair".(a bit underwhelmed by their tecnology I suppose). The most important of their relics however was the calendar adopted by the Mayans.

This is the reason why the Mayans have "Baktuns" or long years where the calendar goes around a cycle.
Apparently one stone recovered seems to suggest that the end of the current "baktun" will be marked by a large "party" (could be ceremony or celebration, depends on which way the hand gesture goes...

A note of importance however is that the Mayan calendar cycle is remarkably accurate considering its Olmec origin. We are now several "baktuns" along from the initial Olmec beginnings and the current one will end on the winter solstice. That is not actually coincidence, but instead a demonstration of very decent orbital math.

Have a nice day: Ag
