I believe Mr. Campbell is not being quite as objective as he pretends and may have a partisan underlying view. I do agree with him up to a point. The outright opposition to both nuclear power and genetic modification is based to a large extent on fear-mongering and also the inability to think in all but black and white terms. However, the ultimate safety of nuclear power is compromised when bad choices are made by human beings. In the case of Chernobyl, the issue was lack of maintenance due to a corrupt and ineffective system. In the case of Fukushima, the issue was lack of thought in siting and lack of planning for an event that was almost inevitable given the local geography and geology.

Nuclear is far safer than wind and such. Chernobyl is the only case where you can point to deaths from nuclear energy accident. Wind and solar have many work place accidents a year, some of which lead to death each year.
By the numbers, if you were to look them up, would show many more deaths in solar or wind energy than nuclear.
Now potential for death is much higher of course in nuclear but currenlty; year to year numbers, nuclear wins.
