Can a Christian Be a Darwinist?

There are 1939 comments on the www.awakengeneration.com story from Feb 22, 2009, titled Can a Christian Be a Darwinist? . In it, www.awakengeneration.com reports that:

Last night I attended a debate at Biola University on the question of whether a Christian can be a Darwinist. Karl Giberson (author of Saving Darwin) argued that the evidence for evolution is “overwhelming,” that is has theological advantages, and that theological problems raised by Darwinism have answers. John West (author of Darwin’s Day in America) argued that Darwinism requires both common ancestry and the efficacy of natural selection acting on random mutation, yet the evidence for random mutation generating biological novelty is nonexistent. While the debate was over two hours, here are some interesting highlights. Since I reject Darwinian evolution, my comments will focus on the arguments of Karl Giberson.

Any chance of explaining how there were days, morning and evening on day 1,2 and 3, but the sun and the stars were only created on day 4? Also what does the author mean when he says that God created the "little light to rule the night"? Did the moon at that time had it's own light?

I have read that some scientists do not believe our moon was always here. I also read that in some ancient writings, the moon did not appear until after the Flood. Also, I have read that, at one time, there were two, or even several moons shining in the night sky, according to ancient writings.

I find this very interesting.

Hi Nettie, I hope you keep well.
I have heard this theory somewhere myself. However 6000 years ago, as the Creationists believe that the Creation took place, the moon was exactly as it is now.

Layers of sediment deposited by tides hundreds of millions of years ago at what today are sites in the United States and southern Australia show that 900 million years ago, a day on Earth was about 18 hours long. The moon has been moving away from Earth at a constant rate during the past 900 million years, according to the same evidence.

I'm always disturbed by the blatant head in the sand approach to creationism. As a christian I have no problem with evolution - god has a wonderful plan and we are part of it - rejoice in that rather than taking a literal view of a chapter that simply tells a story about things that were not understood at the time. God certainly did create everything justt not quite in the way described in Genesis - praise god but get a grip - next you'll be telling me there was a flood that covered the entire earth?????

In other words I am an absolute moron who believes the universe came about through magic not because I can show a rational basis for a belief in magic but rather because it's easy to believe in plus it makes me feel good.

"God certainly did create everything"

Certainly? Why can't you theists understand it is just plain wrong to claim you are certain of the objective truth of any proposition unless you can produce evidence which logically justifies that certainty? Doesn't honesty mean anything to you theists? Religion is the very last place on earth a person should ever look to for ethical guidance. Dishonesty is no virtue.

There is no such thing as a "darwinist". That is as false and dishonest a term as "intelligent design".

How interesting that both dishonest terms are used by the same dishonest people.
