MATTHEW 22:35-40
.

.

.

Many utter this quote here about the most important commandment and have their own ideas about what 'love thy neighbor' means but what I wanted to know is what love thy neighbor meant to Jesus. What I found in Scripture is that love according to Jesus is sharing what you have with, or doing something for, someone else unconditionally. In other words, taking care of a person's every need instead of working for pay.

.
.

LUKE 6:32-35

.

LUKE 10:25-37
.
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/...
.

.

What Jesus was showing his followers here is that Love is Charity and Charity is Love. Love is being your brother's keeper. If a brother, neighbor, or enemy comes to us naked and destitute and we do not give him his daily needs, then our beliefs and religion are worthless. This is what Jesus was teaching his followers and what the Apostles were still teaching others after Pentecost (Acts 2:42-47)

.

-----1 CORINTHIANS 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

.

The Bible also states that a man must love his family by providing everything his family needs in life (ex: 1 Timothy 5:8; Ephesians 5:25-33). This doesn't mean everything they desire, which is 'lust'. The key word here again is 'needs'. So again, charity is taking care of a person's every need, unconditionally, which is real love. Real love according to Jesus is also never letting your left hand know what you're right hand is doing when giving to those in need ( Matthew 6:1-4 ). In other words, don't toot your own horn when you giving to those in need.

__________

.

.

Love is also keeping God's commandments.

.

-----1 JOHN 5:3 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not burdensome.

.

This is because we can't provide anything for God. What can we give God? Since God made all things on earth, there is nothing we can do for God or give to Him. Therefore, the only way a person can show their love for God is to be obedient to Him. Similarly, a woman is not commanded to give anything to her husband but children, respect and faithfulness. So a woman can give her husband love by the giving of things he cannot provide for himself, or by being faithful and obedient to him. These are the same requirements God demands of all human beings: The proof of our love for God is the respect and faithfulness we give Him, which is keeping His commandments, and by bearing children for God: which occurs by helping other people believe in God: which means teaching them to keep His commandments.

.

-------“If you love me, keep my commandments. Blessed is he that keeps my commandments, and teaches men likewise; but cursed is he that breaks my commandments, and teaches men likewise. He shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.”-------Jesus

.

If keeping God's commandments is the essential factor in love and loving God. It is not essential to say I believe in Jesus; but it is essential to do it….... I will show you my faith by what I do, said James the Apostle. It is the works of charity that fulfill all the commandments and the prophets.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

How convienently that dollarsbill totally ignored my post.
he forgets without love he is nothing but sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal. maybe the cat got his tongue and he couldn't get any words out for a proper reply lol.
Love hopes all things and believes all things.
Love never fails. dollarsbill should comment on things he knows about,
and it sure ain't the Bible that he knows.
When the truth is shown to dollarsbill, he twists and turns it all around to make it go his way just like the devil does, hmmm.

The good Samaritan story is a great example of this. We are *commanded* to love, be kind and show compassion to those who hate us. We are not to just love, be kind and compassionate to those who agree with us and are Christians. We are LOVE and be compassionate to all.

What is Christ's definition of love?

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

IMO, the most ignored part of this scripture on Topix is: "It does not dishonor others......" Name calling is an attempt to dishonor others, but in reality, it just shows how far off the mark the person hurling names is. They are dismally failing to obey the second NT commandment, thus also failing to obey the first NT commandment. The two commandments Christ hinges our salvation on:

Luke 10:25-37

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.“Teacher,” he asked,“what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied.“How do you read it?”

27 He answered,“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and,‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied.“Do this and you will live.”

God bless you and yours.

1 Corinthians 13:13

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Love is greater than faith. That is something that ALL Christians should ponder on keeping in mind the Biblical definition of love. Not *our* definitions of love.

God bless.

Is the love of Christ shining here....OR NOT?

1 JN 4:7-10

"Let us love one another,
because love is of God;
everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.
Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.

In this way the love of God was revealed to us:
God sent his only-begotten Son into the world
so that we might have life through him.

In this is love:
not that we have loved God, but that he loved us
and sent his Son as expiation for our sins."

In response to the question about the first of the commandments, Jesus says:
"The first is,‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.'
The second is this,‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
There is no other commandment greater than these."

(Mk 12:29-31; cf. Deut 6:4-5; Lev 19:18; Mt 22:34-40; Lk 10:25-28)

The apostle St. Paul reminds us of this:
"He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments,‘You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,' and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence,‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

(Rom 13:8-10)
