The Index Librorum Prohibitorum was a list of publications prohibited by the Church in 1559. The purpose of the list was to protect the faith by preventing the reading of books or works containing theological errors. Books thought to contain such errors included many scientific works by leading astronomers such as CopernicusOn the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, Johannes Kepler's Epitome of Copernican Astronomy, Galileos Dialogue and all of the works of the scientific Giordano Bruno.
