Since atheist don't believe in God, to whom are they thankful for their very existence? If we are just accidents why be thankful?

AFAIAC we are here because of our parents. Some of us will have been planned, some not. I suppose one could refer to the latter as accidents if one was extremely mean.

IMHO life is what one makes it. Procreation is merely the beginning.

If evolution is true, then we are accidents. That is not being mean but is the implications of evolution. We are just accidents.

How do you arrive at this conclusion?

There is no purpose in evolution. Evolution does not plan or have goals or purposes for living things.

Continuation of species.

Nevertheless it results in animals which are ideally suited to the environment in which they live.

How does this make you thankful?

Understanding I am one of the products of approximately 3.6 billion years of evolution is, IMHO, extremely cool.

This could be one of the dumbest questions ever! Yours, mine, everyones existence is a direct result of our biological fathers sperm fertalizing our biological mothers egg. This is done primarily through unprotected sex, just so you know.

Now do the right thing, and thank your parents for having sex.

It may be cool but you still have no personal ultimate purpose. In fact it would mean that there is nothing really special about human beings. All living things are equal. No difference between a man and a worm.

Who do you thank if your parents are dead? What if your parents were lousy parents?

There is no dilemma here. Gratitude, the expression of it, and the target is always the choice of the individual.

Gratitude makes only sense in regards towards another person.

I don't want an ultimate purpose. I'm happy without one.

Apart from our being top of the food chain.

Nature does not work like this. Watch some wildlife films.

Well we are much bigger and don't usually get cut in half by a spade or dangled in water as bait.

Many peoples only god is "self". Therefore, they need only please themselves.

Gratitude makes whatever sense you want it to make. Some people consider that they can show gratitude towards God - that is their choice, it does not need to make sense to you.
