Greetings to you,

I was thinking about the fact that in none of the laws of the Abrahamic religions is there an age set when marriage becomes permissible. Various interpretations of some Scriptures can provide guidance about the age when marriage/sexual activity becomes permissible but there isn't a set age anywhere where marriage becomes allowed from having been not allowed. What, if anything, does the fact that there is no age stated that a person is officially mature enough for consensual marriage/sexual activity mean to you? Is the right age whenever the person becomes aware of or starts to feel sexual desires? Can you consensually marry someone of any age and just not consummate the marriage until the person becomes aware of/feels sexual desires? Does the persons culture play any part in these questions?...

I think that there is no official age when a person is mature enough to consensually marry someone or engage in sexual activity, and that both of these things are properly done whenever maturation of the person occurs. This could be at whatever age. Is setting a deadline age that maturation should have occurred by (16 for example) fair or just? If no, why not?...
Peace.

Back in Biblical times, a girl became a woman at the onset of her period.......her father had already decided who she would marry based on their wealth and the wealth of the prospective groom's family. This happened basically for the well off, those who were poor or peasants just usually found someone and lived together....no official ceremony took place.....that's how we basically got common-law marriages.

Here's an interesting article about marriage:

In the USA last century, the age of consent was 10 years old. (and in one state, Delaware, the age of consent was only seven). California was the first state to change the age of consent to 14, which it did in 1889. After California, other US states joined in and raised the age of consent too.

Thank you. I'm more interested in what the Abrahamic God said or says about this issue. There are countries today where the age of consent is 13.

I know that the Abrahamic God says that you must marry before having sex and that sex must be consentual, but does He say anything about age? If He doesn't, what are the implications of that?

Well, I'm not much on the age of consent in the bible or if it exists at all.......but I am glad that the age of consent is much older today.......I don't believe any 12 year old is ready for marriage.

I will follow the thread as I do like to learn things:-)

You might just feel this way because in your culture people are reared to still be dependents at the age of 12. I think a 12 year old could be mature enough for marriage.

Federal law

The Federal government has a legal age of consent of 18. This law applies to any actions that take place between different states or on federal property. This makes it a crime to use any form of communication between states to try to get a minor to have sex with an adult. Even if the minor and adult are in the same state, if the communication leave the state, it is a crime. For example, if both people live in the same state and use an instant messaging progam to communicate. If the server used for the communication is in another state, this is a crime.

It is also a crime for a minor to be taken to a different state to have sex. This could happen if the 16 year old lived in a state that had an age of consent of 18 but travelled to a state where the age limit was 16. If the adult travels to a different state or a different country to have sex with a minor, this is only a federal crime if the minor is under the age of 16. It may still be a local crime if the minor was under the age of consent of the state or nation where the sex happened but it is not a federal crime.
States

Each US state has its own age of consent. State laws set the age of consent at 16, 17 or 18. The most common age is 16.[2]

age of consent 16 (29): Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia
age of consent 17 (10): Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Texas, Wyoming
age of consent 18 (12): Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania1

1: In Pennsylvania, the age of consent is 16. If the minor is under the age of 18, the adult can be charged with "Coruption of a Minor". This is a misdemeanor.[3]. If the adult is in a position of power (teacher, clergy, or Police for example), this is a felony[4]. Even though the age of consent is 16, it is still a crime until the age of 18. Becase of this, Pennsylvania is normally listed as if it had an age of consent of 18.

Some states have exceptions to the law for people below the age of consent if their partner's age is within a specific range. This range is often between 2 and 4 years. Some states allow minors who are below the age of consent to consent to sex with their spouses if they are married, but not to anyone else.

There is no listed age of consent in the Bible to my knowledge. The only Biblical guideline that could be related to this issue would be that we are commanded to obey the laws of the land so long as they do not violate Christ's laws. Since the Bible is silent on age of consent, the law of the land would be binding.

Hence, whatever the law of your area is in regard to age of consent for sexual activity would be the Biblical age of consent to marry and have sexual relations.

God bless.

Just calling it like I sees it. You come in here posting questions to bait people into replying only to come down hard on them. I can see it in your writing and your avatar. If not, sorry I blew up as I stand corrected.

Here in Scotland the legal age of marriage is 16 whether you have parental consent or not . In England legally you can marry with parental consent at 16 and have to be 18 to marry without consent . We have many elopers come over our borders to marry without their parents permision though the trend now seems to be more choosing gretna green as a romantic wedding venue for couples of any age as opposed too not so long back it mainly being used by runaway teenageers . As to the Bible I am with Seriously on this one and go with the law of the land even though our scottish laws are pretty stupid you can legally marry have kids work full time buy a house at sixteen but you can't drive a car till seventeen or vote or drink in a pub till eighteen . If we were to look at nature as a guide to when the female and male body are ready and capable of reproduction and base our marriage laws on that then that scares the living daylights out of me as I am preconditioned and shaped by the society I was brought up in which screams wrong wrong wrong far too young . But is it really ? I have neighbors who have been together since fourteen and married at sixteen now celebrating 33 years together . On the other hand As a mum with four of my girls between 9 and almost fifteen I hope they wait till they are well into their twentys before even thinking about it .

This is kinda my view on why the age of maturity is changing. It used to be acceptable (almost expected) for a 14ish year old girl to marry in many countries. An unmarried girl of 21 was almost not marriageable at that time as she was considered a spinster. Now those same countries want the girls to wait until mid 20's to marry.

As time goes on and life gets "easier" I think Americans and many other countries are maturing later and later. Pre-industrial when 6 yr old + worked hard, long manual labor in coal mines, sewing sweat shops, or long hours on the farm those kids matured quicker and knew what was required from them to make it in this world and in a marriage.

Now in America, many teens are only required to get good or reasonably good grades in school and their parents will pay all or almost all their way through college, pay for their cars and pay for their entertainment...no job or very part time job needed.

Real life experience about compromise, disappointments, self sacrifice etc are all taught much later in life now than it used to be. Hormones keep trekking on yes, but emotionally we (Americans) are typically not mature enough to be the self sacrificing individuals required to make a marriage work. Some who marry early mature and grow together. Others do not.

God bless you and yours.

Hi Seriously, I am with you on that its been the same case scenario over here . Part of me loves seeing documentaries on other countries not as developed as ours and seeing the maturity of the young ones and there just getting on with whatever it is they are doing . Another part of me wants to pick them up and do everything for them play games with them and show them how to be young and carefree . I am afraid both our countries have forgotten to keep the balance between the two and our kids today are totally pampered in an instant I want it now and I don't want to work for it . I have more than my own share of guilt in this as a parent and give all too easily with my younger five the older two made there own way for the main part.
youngest son is scaring me just now .He turned sixteen this summer and has left school .He is hoping to get an apprenticeship offshore but the intake isn't till january .He has just spent two weeks working for my brother in an engineering place to cover for someone and worked his socks off for a hundred pound a week which is not bad for sixteen .This would have been all well and dandy if it wasn't for the fact he makes more from stuff he does online for a couple of hours work which isn't even like work .He designs prints for tshirts and gets them printed up and buys them and sells them on for twice as much .He also has web pages with links to advertisers and you tube links which also give him income and God knows what ekse . Friends family ect pay him to do computer stuff they don't know how to do and it all seems to be easy money for little action and I am afraid it may put him off and make him manual work-shy and not help him devolp other skills required for life as quickly as working hard for something . I dunno maybe I am wrong perhaps this stuff will help his development and maturity but I don't think so . God bless you Seriously
