If Jesus suddenly came back to earth today, would he approve or disapprove of modern Christianity?

The percentage of American adults who identify themselves as Christians dropped from 86% in 1990 to 77% in 2001.
This is an unprecedented drop of almost 1 percentage point per year.
-At the present rate of change, most Americans would identify themselves as non-religious or non-Christian by the year 2035 CE.
-Agnosticis, Atheists, secularists. and NOTAs (none of the above) are growing rapidly.
-Interest in new religious movements (e.g. New Age, Neopaganism) is growing rapidly. In particular, Wiccans are doubling in numbers about every 30 months.

Jesus would approve of any person trying to follow Him.
Jesus would direct those persons to The Catholic Church Jesus established and still leads.

Jesus said to him in reply;
"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it."

Absolutely He would disapprove of modern "Christianity". He already said that those who claimed to do anything in His name, but who were 'without Torah', would be told: "I never knew you."

He was a Jew who obeyed Torah. That should answer your question.

..... There are very many versions of what is called "Christianity", but Jesus would insist that the only valid Christianity is his own, and that all that stuff that was invented after his crucifixion must be ignored.

I think Mat 16:18 is the most taken out of context verse there is. It is saying the church is built upon Jesus, NOT the pope. Jesus would not direct anyone to the Catholic Church.

..... The popes do NOT follow the lifestyle of Jesus and they teach other stuff than what Jesus taught and wanted, therefore the popes are NOT Christians as defined.

You exhibit a lack of scriptural understanding.

Of Course The Catholic Church is built upon its founder Jesus Christ, and Jesus appointed St.Peter as the first VIcar of Christ on Earth.

The Church is ultimately one, holy, catholic, and apostolic in her deepest and ultimate identity, because it is in her that “the Kingdom of heaven,” the “Reign of God,” already exists and will be fulfilled at the end of time.
Rev 19:6.

“Just as the office which the Lord confided to Peter alone, as first of the apostles, destined to be transmitted to his successors, is a permanent one, so also endures the office, which the apostles received, of shepherding the Church, a charge destined to be exercised without interruption by the sacred order of bishops.”
Hence the Church teaches that “the bishops have by divine institution taken the place of the apostles as pastors of the Church, in such wise that whoever listens to them is listening to Christ and whoever despises them despises Christ and him who sent Christ.”

The whole Church is apostolic, in that she remains, through the successors of St. Peter and the other apostles, in communion of faith and life with her origin: and in that she is “sent out” into the whole world.

Jesus would not direct anyone to any group outside of His Catholic Church.
