Governor to make one last push for domestic partnerships bill

With one year left in office, Governor Bill Richardson will make one last push for a piece of legislation that eluded him earlier this year.

Great!! A lame duck govenor, very lame, wants to bring up the dead issue again and again. This worthless piece of legislation will fail as it has in the past.

If some lame duck politician wants to get this by they will need to have a general election vote. That way the people will say no or yes.

I've been expecting this. Our governor doesn't care about this issue. He just wants to garner the favor of a special interest group. I won't call it a minority because I don't think homo-sexuality is genetic. It is a choice. If it wasn't a choice, it wouldn't be condemned in the Bible. 3 times in the New Testament, it is stated that homosexuals, along with liars and murderers and thiefs will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. That makes it a choice, just like choosing to do any other kind of wrong. So...if the governor wants equal rights for HOMOSEXUALS, he's sort of telling them they can all go to hell, for all he cares.

One more year too long...this governor hasn't done squat for this state but pave his way for his next political position. He's managed to repeal the death penalty, put judges and politicians in office who mismanage and are corrupt, all while entertaining North Korea! Can we really afford one more year?

Well, Billy Boy, how are you going to handle the unmarried, heterosexual couples when that part of your proposal comes back to bite you? New Mexico is NOT a Common Law state. Before you remove the top off of that Bucket of Worms I suggest you confer with a competent attorney before making a big legal mess. If you proceed down your planned path best you resolve the Common Law marriage issue first. Most states passed laws not recognizing heterosexual, Common Law marriage because of the legal messes they have caused.

I am one of the unmarried couples that he wants to pass legislation for. Both my partner and I don't want it.

If I wanted to get married, I would have. Been there, done that. It did not work. So, I am his beneficiary on paper and he is mine. Duh. End of problem.

We don't have to pay a marriage penalty non our taxes, we will get more Social Security because we will each get a check. As a married couple, I would be on his Social Security as his wife (less money).

Mr. Lame Duck Governor, please stay out of our business. It is cheaper for us not to get married and have all the benefits you are going to force on us.

Let the gays do the same thing. Make each other beneficiaries on paper. End of problem.

Thank God for this online forum where bigoted, narrow-minded views such as those below can be exposed. Such attitudes are exactly why this piece of legislation is needed and why Bill Richardson--despite his flaws--will be remembered as a successful Governor by his state.
By the way, some of the people commenting on this NEW MEXICO legislation are from other states like Oklahoma and Florida. We already know your homes are ignorant backwaters--don't try to spread your southern brand of hate here! New Mexico is tremendously diverse place where tolerance is a prized virtue.

The word "homosexual" has a lot of emotional baggage associated with it. So I'd like to start by talking about another similar group - divorced people who have remarried.

Except for some limited circumstances, divorce is not allowed. And if a Christian gets a divorce and remarries, that person is committing adultery.(See Matthew 5:32 and 1 Corinthians 7:10-16) Adultery is a sin. Yet, there are many remarried people in the church.

How do Christians treat other Christians who have been divorced and remarried? They are treated just like everyone else. Their sin is forgiven and forgotten.

Homosexuality and adultery are both sexual sins. Christians should treat homosexuals the same way they treat remarried couples. There is no difference.

Let's dig a little deeper.

Someone who has been divorced and remarried, and who is a Christian, has come before God and confessed their sin in true repentance. Repentance means they are truly sorry they sinned and they are telling God they do not want to sin again.

If someone marries, gets divorced, confesses their sin -- then repeats the cycle again -- then does it again... and again... there is a problem. That person needs to get help with solving the problem. That person needs our love. Ultimately, however, the best way to show our love, after all else has failed, may be to put that person out of the body of the church, until they recognize their sin and truly change their ways.(The Bible says to turn them over to Satan, and to not allow ongoing sin to misrepresent Christ's church.)

Everything we just said about divorce and remarriage applies to someone who has practiced homosexuality. If someone who has practiced homosexuality comes before God, confesses their sin in true repentance - they are forgiven. The Bible tells us our sins are washed away as if they never existed, and to God we are pure and clean.

But what if someone says, "I am a homosexual. That's who I am and you need to accept me as I am." That person is saying that their behavior (their sin) is who they are. They are saying they are not sorry they are sinning. They are saying they are not going to stop sinning. They are turning their back on God and should be treated in the same way we treat someone who continues to get married and divorced over and over again.

Another example would be a single heterosexual person who sleeps around with many partners.

The Governor needs to stop trying so hard and realize the real problems of the economy needs more attention then this.

Should we judge others?

"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged." (KJV Luke 6:37)

That's what the Bible says. It's very clear, we should not judge others in any way. We should be TOLERANT of everything and anything someone else wants to do -- as long as they are not harming others.

NOT!- That's not right. That is not what the Bible says.

So that means Christians are intolerant bigots.

NO - That also is not right.

Let's take a look at judging and tolerance.

What did Jesus mean when he said, "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged"?(KJV Luke 6:37). He said this as a part of teaching about love and forgiveness. He tells us to love everyone, including our enemies, and that we should not judge them. We should forgive them.

First, we need to note that Jesus is talking about our personal relationships with other people. Our one-to-one relationships.

Second, we need read the entire BIble, not just one verse. Note that in the above verse Jesus is talking about loving and forgiving other people. He does not say we should love what they are doing (or saying). In the Bible there is a distinction between people, and their behavior.

The Bible also tells us there are things that we are supposed to hate -- sins.

Sins are behaviours and thoughts that separate us from God.

"--your sins cut you off from God." (NLT)- Isaiah 59:2

"Don't you know that those who do wrong will have no share in the Kingdom of God? Don't fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers and swindlers--none of these will have a share in the Kingdom of God." (NLT) 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

God hates sin and so we are also to hate sin.

"There are six things the LORD hates--no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord among brothers." (NLT) Proverbs 6:16-19

As Christians we are to love the sinner, but hate the sin.

This means Christians are to be tolerant of others, but intolerant of sin. We are to love other people, and treat all other people with love, but that does not mean that we accept their sinful behavior. On the contrary, we are to detest and hate all sinful behavior and thoughts.

Should we judge others?

This is part two of the answer to the above question. If you have not read part one, you may wish to start with part one.

Judge behavior, not people: We now see that Jesus is telling us to not judge other people. This makes sense, we have no way to know someone else's thoughts or motives.

However, we do need to judge the behavior and speech of others.

For example: 2 Corinthians 6:14 tells us that we should not marry a non-Christian: "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers". How can we tell if someone is a believer or unbeliever? We judge their behavior. James 2:14-26 shows us that we see another's faith through their behavior.

Another example: 1 Corinthians 5:1-8 tells us that if someone is an unrepentant sinner, that person should be "turned over to Satan" by excluding the sinner from Christian fellowship.

"How terrible that you should boast about your spirituality, and yet you let this sort of thing go on. Don't you realize that if even one person is allowed to go on sinning, soon all will be affected? Remove this wicked person from among you so that you can stay pure." (NLT)- 1 Corinthians 6-7

We should judge other's behavior: Throughout the Bible we see that we are to judge the behavior of others.

We should not punish: However, we are not--as Christans--to punish them. Punishment is to be left to the proper authorities (government) and God.

We should not support sin: On the other hand we should not support sinful behavior, nor should we protect people from the consequences of unrepentant sinful behavior.
