In U.S., a growing unease at mixing politics with prayer

There are 697 comments on the www.reuters.com story from Mar 22, 2012, titled In U.S., a growing unease at mixing politics with prayer. In it, www.reuters.com reports that:

Americans are increasingly uneasy with the mingling of religion and politics, according to a poll released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center, in the midst of a campaign season punctuated by tussles over the role of faith in the public square.

Back in 2001, when Pew first asked the question, just 12 percent of Americans complained that their politicians talked too much about religion.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." <First Amendment to the Constitution".

http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/billo...

So as long as Congress isn't making any laws regarding religion, anyone can pray as they so choose.

If they are a butcher, baker, candlestick maker, they can pray.

If they are a politician, they can pray too.

So long as Congress isn't making religious laws, prayer, spirituality, religion, etc. is okay to intermingle within one's life, business career, political career, etc.

<though I personally feel that if a polititian wants to thump his bible and preach, he WON'T get my vote; but that's HIS CHOICE to do as he chooses>

Hey Reich-wing, if you love the U.S. Constitution, pay attention to it. No one wants our politicians to be our pastors.

When religion and politics are combined, you have the reich-wing example of Shria Law.

Theocracies Suck.

Say goodbye to freedom when you allow religion to rule politics.

I dare the reich-wing to show us an example of a theocracy that allows individual freedoms.

....calm down. Congress and the President can pray all they want. Lets just make it so the government can't demand we follow the rules of any particular faith. We don't need laws to make sure we pray to a particular faith.

Is that too much to ask for?

If it is, be prepared for the laws of the land to change depending on the faith of those who make the rules.

Might have Romney demanding we pray to Joseph Smith.

So if we did combine Church and State, and Romney became President, would we be comfortable with Federal laws being based on the Book of Morman?

The issue with combining Church and State through laws is that the "Church" component changes base on the current faith of the State.

Can't even spell "Christian" can you.

You're what we call a faux Christian. You can defend the faith, you just don't practice the faith.

If you did, you'd know how to spell "Christian".

Absolutely ridiculous. And you misspelled it each time.

PS....President Obama can spell "Christian".

People are free to openly practice the tenets of their religion. They are NOT free to impose those tenets on those who do not share their beliefs. I have as much right to freedom FROM religion as people have freedom OF religion. Morons like the rickster seem to think that their beliefs are superior to all others and want to impose them on normal educated citizens.

Your use of the term "Reich-Wing" is dishonest. Hitler taught that the Nazi political party would replace religion. Of course, until the time when that happened, he had appointed a Lutheran Bishop as the Reich Bishop.

Hitler was a liberal not a conservative. Everything he believed and promoted came from the extreme liberal side of the aisle.

Tell us how Coughlin's universally known radio broadcasts are not anti Semitic, you ignorant, denying fool.
As Couglin pointed out, the people who accuse him of anti-semitism never even listened to his radio broadcasts.

Accusing Catholic priests and Catholic leaders of anti-semitism is the lefts main mode of getting its extreme agenda promoted in a predominatly protestant country. It is old hat.

I haven't listened to Coughlin's radio broadcasts and don't feel the need to. He defended himself and denied the accusation of anti-semitism. I'll take his word over the anti-Catholic factions' word every day of the week.

The more politicians bring religion into politics and using religion as to how they think the country should be run is turning many Americans off from religion. Santorum, a great example, turned his religion into disgust for many people and view him as if he's trying to run for pope instead of the presidency.

I stated that Coughlin answered the allegations of anti-semitism himself. I stated I was not defending him and referred you to his own defense. I don't feel the need to defend him because he defended himself, and I am not one of his fans, nor enemies for that matter, nor did I ever meet him. That was way before my time.

I feel that the http://www.fathercouglin.com domain is a far more reliable domain than the
http://www.fathercouglin.org domain. It at least
provides a copy of his self defense. The other domain makes accusations typical of an anti-Catholic website.

By left I do not mean Jews although I am sure there are some Jews on the left just as there are some on the right. To me the new left is the old right combined with the old left; fanatically and extremely liberal and tooty fruity.

Socialism, Communism, Progressivism, Social Darwinism, Social Gospelers, Eugenics, Nihilism, Indifferentism, Relativism, Pragmatism, Logical Positivism, the Radical Protestant sects, the Unitarians, the Freemasons, the Radical Feminism (originally associated with the Radical Protestant sects) and other extreme groups are generally what I mean when I refer to the left. Generally, I leave Reform Jews out of the group, but some Reform Jews associate with them. Orthodox Jews are likely to look at them like they are idiots just like I do.
