Cuts you off from the Triple Gem Refuge!
According to the Commentary, a novice who breaks any of the first five training rules has cut himself off from the Triple Refuge, from his teacher, and from his right to a lodging in a monastery.
Although the comment is about a novice this most likely applies to lay people as well.
So any Buddhist who says that the precepts are "voluntary" or not important to be a Buddhist--are very ignorant.
Keep the 5 precepts!
