How do we become self reliant? When there are so many people asking, begging god(s) to grant this wish or that-- like spoilt children. Buddha teaches to stand up and simply ask, "have I done enough good and worked hard to EARN what I have wished for?
“The whole secret of existence is to have no fear. Never fear what will become of you, depend on no one. Only the moment you reject all help are you freed.” Buddha
King Nimi is offered a share of merit from the God King Indra-- Lord Buddha refuses any handouts!
"As when a chariot, or when goods are given on demand,
So is it to enjoy a bliss given by another's hand.
I care not blessings to receive given by another's hand,
My goods are mine and mine alone when on my deeds I stand.
I'll go and do much good to men, give alms throughout the land,
Will follow virtue, exercise control and self-command:
He that so acts is happy, and fears no remorse at hand."

Now in Buddhism, the first 3 levels of Buddhists are called Sekhs or learners. They are still in the process of learning and so have a certain level of dependence.
However the Arahant is one who has completed the task, he/she now can stand alone and is no longer dependent--he/she has completed the Dhamma and training-- graduated!

Now in Buddhism, one becomes fearless due to doing the right thing-- when you did nothing wrong, what do you have to fear?
