Rather than jump on this so quickly as a signal of something mean-spirited and sinister, one could first ask the Spiritual Assembly of Springfield what happened. The story may not be what it appears. Specifically:(1) Why did the collated responses to the survey not show the responses to the open-ended questions? Did the surveyors explain clearly to the respondents that gay people are not currently protected from discrimination under the law? Did the surveyors themselves have a particular viewpoint they were attempting to demonstrate? Did the Spiritual Assembly mistakenly assign an inexperienced person to answer questions?
Now that those watchful for every misstep have publicly condemned an entire Baha'i community and its elected institution, rather than seeking out the truth first, I doubt that any explanation or correction will suffice. This is too bad. Within the Baha'i community, the proper course is first to determine the facts, then to appeal to the institution with which one disagrees, and then appeal higher. I have found that when a Baha'i chooses to attack other Baha'is in the print media, it has rarely resulted in finding the truth.
