This immediately brought to mind this verse from the book of Proverbs:

Pro 12:10 A righteous person cares for the life of his animal, but even the most compassionate acts of the wicked are cruel. NET Version

and from the Book of Romans:

Rom 1:22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools NET Version
