I thought it was Internet short-hand for "hate theist" and derogatory of atheists. Presumably nobody nice would want that on their car.

Atheism is simply disbelief in god(s) and presumably "hate the action not the person" is the intended message in the number plate. Even then it seems to be an inappropriate over-use of "hate".

Anyway, it's fuss about nothing. Making political and social comments are what bumper stickers are for.

It is quite bad according to some reports, but only in areas with high Muslim populations...

I believe Muslims are about 4% of the population now (but about 12% of the prison population). We also have a future head of state that wants the title 'Defender of Faith' and unelected bishops in our Upper House.

We also have problems of child genital mutilation, child marriage and religious courts. Again, though serious, they shouldn't be blown out of proportion and they are being addressed.

Britain has problems caused by creationism in schools too but that is not only due not to having our children segregated according to their parents religious delusions and being indoctrinated by Muslim or RC clerics. It is also due to organisations funded from the USA, e.g....

The USA’s religious problems are very different but in one respect they are worse. At least in the UK voters aren’t likely to be prejudiced for or against anyone due to their religious faith or lack of any. Prejudice in the USA seems comparatively rampant....

A 2012 Gallop poll indicated only 54% of USAmericans would vote for a non-believer presidential candidate....

Viewed from here it can appear that in the USA every issue is a fight. Issues aren’t debated so much as fought to insanity and beyond.

It’s divisive and nothing but trouble these days.

(I inadvertently put an extra 'not' in that sentence above!) In the UK we are sadly saddled with religiously denominated schools.
