That "writer" is a faitheist, not an atheist. He's making excuses for the relligious.

He's lying about "intellectual luxury for the wealthy". The poor tend to be more religious because they are clutching at straws. They're desperate and hoping they "inherit the earth", lying to themselves as a form of security blanket. And there are plenty of poor atheists as well.

Atheism is not a rich versus poor dichotomy. Atheism is the educated versus the ignorant. Plenty of rich people who are godbots, all smug and self satisfied, using religion to rationalize their selfishness and greed.

This is also why the poor are also frequently victims of the lottery.

Religion is a necessity for the wealthy.

Religion for the non-wealthy, that is.

It is much easier to pick the pocket of someone who is always gazing up at the sky.

Or, as Bob Marley put it, "If you know what life is worth, you will look for yours right here on earth, now that we see the light, we gonna stand up for our rights."

Religion is the pacifier the wealthy use to ward off class warfare. If they can convince people there's a next world where they will be rich, they will be less inclined to think about income and wealth inequality in this life. If they can convince you that it is "god's will" that you are poor, you aren't going to question "god's will" by demanding fair taxation, decent health care, a living wage, etc.

It's been that way since the church and the nobility got together to convince the peasants that kings ruled "by the grace of god".

So drug addicted prostitutes are religious, and this makes their life bearable? This makes atheism wrong, or at least unsuitable?
Does the author suggest that drug use must also be left alone, because it makes their lifes brighter? Non-alcoholism is a luxuty for the wealthy?
The article is pathetic.

In the south(red states) there's a few things one must accept as default. They wave their flags, thump their bibles, kill Bambi, pack iron and vote Republican. Most of them believe dinosaurs came with a saddle.

I agree. Most people I know aren't believers and certainly aren't religious. I don't move in wealthy circles and I'm not convinced that more poor people are religious. I tend to associate the religious with bigotry and prejudice.....
http://www.positiveatheism.org/writ/ghwbush.h...
http://www.gallup.com/poll/155285/atheists-mu...

superstition....
https://www.google.co.uk/search...

outdated traditions (religiously motivated child genital mutilation; Shia flagellation and other rituals)

Religious courts, tending to undermine one law for all.

Sectarianism.... The list is long and not good. The religious can't even get along with each other. They regard witchcraft as superstition while celebrating the 'body of Christ' or some other silly prophet.

Religion = superstition
If it isn't actually a sort of madness.

Philosophy

is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.[1][2] Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument.[3] In more casual speech, by extension, "philosophy" can refer to "the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group".[4]
The word "philosophy" comes from the Ancient Greek φιλ οσο φία (philosophia), which literally means "love of wisdom".[5][6][7] The introduction of the terms "philosopher" and "philosophy" has been ascribed to the Greek thinker Pythagoras.[8]

This coming from a retarded POS that posted all Atheists are despicable people.

I would never say that of all believers, as most are not unreasonable bigots.

Your hate is matched only by your ignorance.
